This is a tutorial constructed from my latest YouTube video, in which you can see all the key steps of this illustration as they are drawn, much of it in real time:[link]
Heartfelt thanks to anyone who chooses to help out by purchasing one of my books:

How did the pencil get underneath the eyelash drawings in the 15th step?

It's from a cross-fade in the video. If you watch the vid you'll see how video segments overlap one another sometimes to reduce the overall length.

You do know when you say "Photo-realistic"
You do need a photo (or a person)?
right?

Yeah. You would need a reference to draw off of.

nah. realism is just the essence of a life-like representation and composition.
You're thinking still life.

Pixelated-Dreams In reply to FenrusU [2010-04-29 17:35:58 +0000 UTC]
No, Im thinking Photo-realistic.
As in, PHOTO-realistic.
As in, you draw it as a photo would capture it.
The name of the tutorial is Photo realism.
A still life is usually a drawing/painting of objects (Sometimes figures).

I love your tutorials. They make complex things so much simpler. I've seen tutorials that barely told what they were doing, but when I use your tutorials I can notice how much more it helps as compared to the others.

Hello, Great tutorial and I love the video as well
I think that it would be better chance of being spotted if you'd change it into a proper part of gallery : Resources & Stock Images - Tutorials - Traditional Art - Drawing
Cheers

I wonder if it's possible to make a realistic-looking image like this one with a pen... I don't like how pencil smudges of... >.<

Melancholic-Symphony In reply to TheClintHennesy [2010-06-17 02:53:47 +0000 UTC]
Personally I use what we call "roller" pens. They have a good quality ink that stays in the paper but won't smudge if you allow it to dry (doesn't take long). The consistency is similar to India ink, which is typically used in calligraphy. Due to some lessons I had, I found it was much better to use India ink or a pen with similar consistency. I've done many pen & ink drawings. No matter what you have to tread carefully. I sketch them out in pencil then ink it when done. After you allow it to dry, you can erase the pencil marks, but carefully.
Back in high school we would have to do lots of practice with these, and at the end of that drawing phase we would vote on each other's work to see who would be in the calendar that we sold for fundraising. It was pretty cool.

depends on what pen you're using, and how you use it, eh mate?
Ballpoint pens are quite capable of this stuff, given you put practice into it.
On the other hand, you could use markers if art life-span is your deal.

That is amazing. I love how you've got all the details down to perfection, especially the lashes, which I have found to be quite troublesome.
