Hi Mark!
First off, I got your book yesterday and I really love everything you put into this! I was hoping if you were going to make a second one.

I love how you gave different options of styles, poses, and expressions. The hand and foot references look like they will be quite helpful in time! I think you have made less scary for many people. I really loved the tips on how to make an actual manga page! I've never seen a how to draw book cover this! Also, I really like how all this information was pieced together in this book. Everything is easy to find when looking back.

Maybe your next how to book should cover more about the body and faces in different angles. And maybe more on different body types, since you know how to keep things respectful towards everyone, and the thought that not many manga books cover this. Lastly, maybe how different weather can make characters affects their hair and clothes (wet character from rain, a windy day).

As for the level of another, I would think in-between easy and hard is great, just like you have already done.

Thank you so much for creating this, its very useful and fun!

Hello, ive purchased the book on the kindle and i loved it! some things that i would like to see expanded is on how to draw hair styles and differant eyes specifically~ I would also love to see a section on how to actually design a character and their clothes and things like that, i bet that would be immensly helpful. and personally i think that everything was great in the book, nothing i could see could get better than that! ^^ and then i would prefer a book aimed more tward advanced drawing but i think that it would be good to do a thing where you had something like a "beginers basics" book and a "advanced artist" book so that there would be one for each of us, the current book is kind of like the inbetween.

i have the book and love it!
i would really like a second book from you to be one of two things or 3

1: a break down of the anatomy such as more of a detailed how to on hands, feet, neck, etc
it could cover things like the general way to judge foreshortening and and folds the body naturally has

2: A COSTUME AND POSE ENCYCLOPEDIA!!!
there are not too many really good costume and pose encyclopedias out there
i would really REALLY love to see a costume encyclopedia from you!!!
over the years i have noticed i really like the clothes you draw and i could see you having an enormous amount of success with a costume encyclopedia
it could include things like designs of costumes similar to [link]
i dont think i have ever seen a lolita style dress from you and would really love to see how you would go about it.
incorporating a pose encyclopedia would be great too
the book could follow a pattern of breaking down a costume for a page or two and then be followed by pages of a character in the costume in multiple poses

3. possible combination of the two

as i was typing option 2 i began to really love the idea more and more especially after the list thing about the pattern to the book!!
i sincerely hope you read this and you consider doing option 2

thanks for everything

I think it would be fun to see sailor uniform variations, and fantasy outfit variations. It'd also be nice to have some tips on where to put folds in clothes and ESPECIALLY a tutorial, with everything from rough sketch, to outlining, to coloring with mediums. I can't find any tutorials that really show what I'm looking for and I've found that a lot of coloring tutorials are hard to apply to just any picture you draw if the picture you're drawing is at a different angle or something like that.

Jessicamv In reply to ??? [2012-02-24 23:19:35 +0000 UTC]

1. I can actually think of a lot of things. One thing is that I wish there were more head angles/views/positions rather than just the three you put in there (front view, three-quarter view, and profile view). For example: looking up, looking down, the back of the head, looking to the side, etc.
2. I would love to see a section dedicated to lighting/shading. Not necessarily HOW to shade, but rather WHERE to shade. (How lighting can affect shading and highlights.)
3. I felt the guidelines for body proportions were a tad bit too simple. You might have intended for it to be that way (for beginners), but I still feel like they needed to be a more detailed. I would also like to see proportions for hands, feet, etc.
4. I would prefer to have more advanced material. I’m definitely not a professional, but even if the content was more difficult, I could push myself more and eventually figure it out for myself. It’s more satisfying knowing you accomplished a higher-end level. Plus, you’re a professional who has written and published other graphic novels, so I would love to rise to that level of talent. I think Mastering Manga has a fair amount of beginner’s material, so I would like to see more advanced stuff in a new book.
5. What I love most about this book are the reference pages of the hands, feet, hair, eyes, expressions, etc.β€”my favorite part of the book. I can’t tell you how much I will be referring to those pages. Keeping in mind of what type of artist I am, I find it incredible difficult to draw realistic people/faces from memory, so I constantly refer to other pictures when I’m drawing. They’re very helpful and I think you should absolutely include them in your next book.

I know I can write a lot when it comes to critiquing, but I hope it was helpful. Overall, I think it’s a great book. Definitely a lot of good tips that have helped me. Big thanks for everything you do, and good luck with the possible new book! I actually just got my book in the mail today, so I’ll be flipping through it all day. ^^

I haven't checked out your book yet, but I enjoy your art.

I would like to various types of wings. Angel/Bird wings, Demon/Bat wings, Dragonfly wings, Magic/Robotic wings, etc. Maybe some tips on story-building and character interactions. Various types of clothing and accessories; robes, suits, vests, frills, armor, swim suits, goggles, hats, gloves, pocket watches, hair clips and so on would be nice.

I'll second the suggestions about animals, backgrounds, plants and mix between advanced and beginning.

I myself have yet to see the book, so I don't know what you've already touched up on and what you haven't. But I'd still like to recommend tutorials on how to draw stuff like fantasy creatures, aliens, animals, landscapes/backgrounds, vehicles, weapons, and just stuff that's more for people who want to draw something "out of the norm" or something other than humans. Just a thought. c:

Hey, Mark! I love the reference! I think the most helpful thing to advanced artists would be more reference pages, more anatomy poses, landscapes, backgrounds, props, clothing styles, etc. Talk about how to use reference without copying by combining two or more sources into a final illustration.
LOL! Sorry to make you work so hard!

Cheers!

Oh and I reeeeaally need help with backgrounds, an in depth tutorial on that would be fantastic! Oh and how to draw whites, from asians... as some manga's have both, some people do it really well and you can tell instantly wether or not they're asian (like in Full Metal Alchemist), but in others it' hard to tell, without being told. Thanks again!

Well I say Mark, even though I haven't got my hands on mastering manga(which I will do once I get around to it), I'm juts gonna throw suggestions in of what i want to learn. I would like a very detailed explanation on wring a manga like from the start of blank paper, to the page lay out, more details on panelling, right up to screen tones. I aspire to be a manga artist, and I wish to know how other artists work. I am going to be a drawing a manga for my mother, she is an author you see, and she's writing me an offside story (for her book she is currently writing) to draw into a manga, and I wish to know how other artists, work to be able to develop my own comfortable style of things. Thank you! Oh! and one more question, do you screen tone digitally (like on photoshop, if not another program?) or traditionally...?

Hi there!
I have always wanted to see an in depth look at how to ink drawings, and what tools are really needed for finalizing a picture. Do you ever use Photoshop? If so, I would hope to see some basic lessons in that as well. Also, I would really like to see a section on how touching things (like fabric, objects, etc.) effects the way they look. I would also like to see how to draw backgrounds (like water for lakes and oceans, trees, mountains) just so a drawing can be filled out. Thank you for all your hard work!

I think the book covers lots of stuff, so I think it's fine. I think that the second book should be more advanced than the first one. Kind of like "you got tips from the first one, now build on your skills" sort of thing. It would make it a continuation, and because it is more advanced, it would be more detailed. Could be called "Further Masting Manga" or "Mastering Manga - The Next Step".

I ordered my book a few days ago, semi-patiently waiting~

Firstly I would prefer a more advanced book, sort of like a step up from this one.

As for topics:
1.)Ooh what about character design? I've never seen a how to draw manga book cover that and it would be insanely useful! Gah I can't even- so useful!
2.) Something on character variety? A cast entirely made of bishies does not a good story make. (ex: body type, age ect.)
3.) The difference between novel, (American) comics, and manga story plots
4.) Which stories would and wouldn't work in manga form and why
4.) People sitting, especially when they're behind things also, like tables and desk
5.) Different types of negative emotions (not just generically angry, or generically sad)
6.) Shading hair
7.) Artistic styles that would and won't work for manga
8.) Line width
9.) How clothes, hair & accessories move in different situations (falling, underwater, in a wind tunnel)

what i would want in a how to draw book? hmm

mainly how to get as accurate as you can with proportions (im not too great at those ^^") and drawing hands and feet (i know a lot of books do that but they never really break it down into sketching and planning and such)

and definitely examples and tips on drawing folds in clothes...

yeah i cant think of anything else right now but thats what i would personally want in a drawing book :3
