I dunno if this has been asked, but what about height variations? Like, how to not make them not look awkward standing next to an average height person! Correct proportions and such.

Helpful stuff maybe:
- Animals
- Monsters (Something that a character could fight/befriend perhaps)
- Swords, daggers, guns or any weapons
Thanks and I hope this helps!

i love your mastering manga book, it's amazing and just cover about everything i need and been looking for.
so, here's what i think it might help with us too. can you put in your possible 2nd book on drawing different kinds of backgrounds, buildings, houses (mansions, castle, churches, etc), and animal or fantasy creatures, maybe a tutorial on putting shades or tones in your manga, and some tips for dummies, oh! and how to color?

Oh! one more thing! I would LOVE a simple page on how to draw people in a classroom! I'm having so much trouble with drawing the desks and people so some look close and some look far away. I know things that are further away are smaller, but I can't figure out how to position everything D: Should all the desk-legs be at the same level and just get shorter and smaller? Or should the desk tops be at the same level? People? Heads? Feet? Arg!

First of all, you've done an awesome job on the book. I had mine pre-ordered at Amazon, and I got it in the mail last week.
Topics I'd definitely like to have expanded or included for the next book are:
1. Character perspective & dynamics, like angles viewed above, below or behind the character.
2. More backgrounds & background perspective, mostly nature backgrounds (forests, mountainous regions, water/lakes/rivers/waterfalls, etc.) if you can.
3. Character types & clothing, like fantasy, sci-fi, steampunk, etc.
4. Weaponry, like swords, daggers, bows, etc.
As for the book level, I'd definitely would like to see more intermediate to advanced stuff.
Anyway, keep up the amazing work!

I would like to see tips on age differences. I found myself trying to draw a teen and then sombody in their twenties... but I had no idea how to show that they were such different ages! Also, I have always had the same trouble with my characters that I have with my wardrobe. I never know what to put on them, so it's always just jeans and a tee or a simple outfit. I'd love some tips on how to take a simple outfit and make it more interesting (like with your plaid jacket in the how to draw hoodies video!)

Just ordered your book earlier this week! Can't wait for it to come in!
I haven't looked into the book besides your sneak-peak, so I'm not entirely sure what the entire book does consist of but here's some of my ideas for the next book.
I would personally want something that leans more into something much more advnced such as:
-foreshortening
-poses where the body is twisting. (ex. looking behind)
-weather and nature (storms/lightning, rain, water, rock, trees, and fire)
-inking and how to not shake so much whie doing so
-hats
-glasses
-animals
-hands holding weapons and weapons in general.
-I know you're covering perspective already but how about examples of people in perspective?
So yeah, that's about all I can think of.
Hope that helps you!

I would like to see more details on creating certain things, for instance creating poses. how you get to a certain pose, how you sketch it out, how you are able to get the porpotions on that particular pose... creating a general profile and stance is fine for an introduction, but a little more in depth would be awesome. Also, different angles on people would be nice as well.

Well, there is this thing that you always say that you will make a video of and never do. Shading. Of course there is no set way of doing it, but you could make a section in the book about it. I haven't seen your first one yet but I'm talking my parets into buying it. But Shading is a thing that I often find myself with trouble on. Give suggestions of where to put shade, some signs that indicate (love that word) that there needs to be shade. You could even zoom through a few different styles of shading like the soft one, cell shading and a bunch of others. So yeah...Shading is a big thing I guess.
Another big thing would be clothes. I'm fairly sure that you probably covered it in the first book, but with clothes there are endless possibilities. Maybe go in depth about certain types of cloth or perhaps lace. Lace is hard. Something else that might help are the small things in an outfit that really make a difference. I really suck at clothes but maybe as a professional, you've noticed that theres one area in the outfit that really draws the attention. And then there is always the dreaded folds. People are always messing up those and bugging you to help them, so why not get it over with. People meaning me.
Movement. Your drawings always express some sort of movement. Sort of a given since you're a comic artist, but my drawings always seem sort of still. Try giving tips or maybe just a few refs of things being blown by the wind like a simple table cloth or some hair. Then maybe some sort of physical action like running or dancing. You could even try something like a finger twitching or a leg spinning around in circles. There are things that are depicted in manga and comic books in general that demonstrate small movements. Heck, even in some anime they have that. Like when something is trembling there a little squiggly lines all around the thing thats shaking.
If you ask me if I want advance or beginner, I'd say intermediate but leaning more towards advance. I mean, there are already lots of books about the basics out there. Or even sites or your own videos that cover those. I learned my basics from a site called Manga University. It wasn't the best, and I still haven't learned all that it has to teach, but it got me through that first step and I've made a lot of progress since then. From what I've seen of your first book, you made it so a complete beginner could greatly benefit from it. And your videos also helped me out a great deal in my early days in drawing, so I think that you should make at least a portion of the book for the more advanced students. Of course all your beginner lessons still help me greatly, but you could cover a lot more ground and maybe benefit those intermediate students that are stuck in a rut with a slightly more advanced tutorial or guide.
Well Mark, I hope my input helped you out and I wanted to thank you for all that you've taught me. So thank you.

I'm not sure if you covered this in the first one, but making small differences to change age would be cool. My characters usually end up looking more teenager than someone in their 20's or 30's, which is what I'm going for. For example, I would like to know how head size, limb length, and face shape affect the look of a person's age. For me right now, it's just trial and error until they end up looking the right age.

Hi Mark Crilley,
Wow, what exciting news! Congratulations!
This is from a point of view of not got the book yet (which I haven't - but ordered).
There are many books out there of Manga books which shows you different ways to draw a character, but what it hasn't got is a more detailed way into the character. E.g How to draw the creases in the clothing, different ways to colour the clothes - light directions, tones etc.
Another point is I find that the books out there don't have ways to show doing different poses like sitting on a chair, lying on a bed, sitting on the floor, sitting on a swing, that type of stuff.
About characters, how to create your own character, how to show the different personalities by the way they look.
Emotions / facial expressions, Lots of expressions and underneath each picture a short description on what they mean.
Colouring techniques - I said this on the first point but how to colour - different ways like cross hatching, or blending etc. More detail view on it. Textures on clothing!! No artist I have read done it yet
How to do backgrounds - not as much as buildings really more of the landscape side.
How to draw a manga person holding objects such as bags, umbrellas, books, pens, mobiles etc..
How to draw Manga pets - animals
Hands, feed (from different views left side, right side) Detail ways of showing.
Animation - How to draw people waving, walking, sitting, dancing ... (don't know if you are into that type of thing)
Weather - how to draw rain, sunny day, snow, etc.
Font / typography - How to draw the letters etc..
Some of the subject above might be covered in the first book, I don't know as have not seen it but I'm sure it will be awesome
Keep up the awesome work, writing, youtube videos
Your my inspiration, big fan.

Personally, I would like to know more about backgrounds, paneling, and how to go about drawing things in the panels, as well as where to place speech bubbles, sound effects and the like. Also a section (I don't know if this is covered already) on how to draw animals... not the cutesy way that is in multiple how-to-draw books. Weaponry would also be a section I would look forward to. Also, how to draw various shoes would be a huge help.
As for the level of the second book, I would go full fledged advanced. There's so many other how-to-draw books that are for beginners and intermediate, and I've seen very few advanced.

Okay so my book is coming in tomorrow (on my birthday!) so I don't know what exactly is covered in it. I have seen the sneak peek of the book so I have an idea. Maybe you could show us how to draw backgrounds. For example a forest, an ocean, lake, outside a building in different angles, inside a building at different angles. Things like that. Maybe you could also do things like head-wear. Headbands, goggles, hats. Those in different angles because everything looks different in different angles. How to place characters in different scenes during different situations. How to draw the head from interesting and awkward angles. What works and doesn't work when it comes to a scene. How to create a plot line. Do you base it the character? How do the side characters affect the development? Things of the nature.

I haven't seen your first book yet, but I know I would like to see some ideas on drawing people in perspective. I'm decent with drawing a lot of people related things and poses, but I've never been able to do much with perspective, or even just their heads raised or lowered.
Also, I find that there are so many how to draw manga books out there published by so many different people, but most of them cover the same bases such as what tools to use, and step by steps on faces, bodies and some action poses. I'd like to see some more advanced things, such as a great guide to proportions, an extensive look at clothing folds, draping, texture and weight, as well as drawing young and old people alike. A lot of how to draw books right now focus on just drawing 15-20 somethings and don't really delve into drawing grandmas and babies.
I think it would be really beneficial to have a how to draw book that focused on a lot of the things that the majority of the how-tos leave out. I haven't bought a how to draw manga book in years because I've already found what the newer ones were teaching in ones that I had bought in the past. It'd be really nice to see something a little more advanced out there, while still being understandable to beginners.

1. Probably some expansion on more dynamic poses, e.g. fighting, hugging, running, jumping, climbing trees, putting on make-up when you're up there, etc.
2. Something that I've wanted to see from you for a long time is Facial Hair. Hats would also be good to include.
3. Honestly it seemed like there was a lot of copy paste in the text, which I found semi-annoying. I mean things like at the end of every lesson saying it can be colored, toned, etc. with the exact same word usage. Just IMHO. I think somehow fixing that would help the book feel better somehow XD
4. Personally I would love advanced stuff, but I also know that beginner stuff is important, so a mix would probably be best.
5. Just more of what you do so well! Honestly I wish we could know if this would be an ongoing series of books, because then you could actually focus them, and that I feel would help alot. Then you could do a book on Action Scenes and blocking (the stage term) a scene, another on clothing and restaurants (or something), and another on mecha and vehicles. As it stands now it seems like it would be basically touching on a bunch of topics, which is kinda helpful, but more focus would be nice.

As far as what level the book is at I would say advanced. What I like about mastering manga is that it includes more than just how to draw the characters. Even going so far as to create a sample manga page. I would like to see your next book expand the how to create a manga aspect of the book. Tips for how to create dialogue, how to make the story flow, making the art match the story. You could even have a section about how to prepare your work or portfolio. Basically a book on how to actually make a manga from start to finish, and not just the characters.
