Mandelbulb 3D v1.8.2 [link]DEcombinate in min mode using: HeightMapIFS/SphereHeightMapIFS/CylinderHeightMapIFS/TorusIFS
Not strictly a 'pure' fractal - all dIFS - but it was the only way to get the outcome I was looking for.
Two layers in PS, so it's a manip too!
Continuing my attempts to fractally portray scenes from Iain M. Banks's 'Culture' novels,
this is an imagining of the ship 'Clear Air Turbulence' landing at the Vavatch 'Orbital';
an immense toroidal structure landscaped on its inner surface.
Taken from his superb novel 'Consider Phlebas'.
Rumour has it that a movie treatment is in preparation! Boy, would I love to work on that one!!

Yes I would like to try, usually need to knock down(or increase stepwith lim and rayst mult )to shorten render time so would experiment with how much image is degraded to see if its worth a long render... if you want you can e-mail me the params @ joeyg007@yahoo.com or here at DA. Thanks

awesome work... I only recently discovered Banks, MalDudemaker sent me a copy of "Surface Detail" and I have a few others in PDF from a torrent site, but have barely scratched the surface of "Surface Detail" so far (no pun intended)
But this does seem very well suited to what I do know of his novels!

His concepts are so huge, but he keeps the human element totally
believable. I'm going through my Banks collection sifting out scenes
to illustrate fractally....
'Surface Detail' is excellent; have you read 'Excession' yet? Superb imho!

ah no, Surface Detail is the only one I've read any of... and I'm only into that maybe 10 chapters if that far. In some ways, he takes a bit of getting used to, not really like most of what I normally read. I do like "huge concepts" but with banks, it seems to take a good bit of information before you really start to grasp it, even in a small way. I think I have about six other novels of his in the PDFs, so once I've gotten through SD I'll be digging deeper. Then again, its been a little rough getting through SD because of so much other stuff going on right now. I have not been reading much of anything really, and some days I just can't find the time to pick up SD. But from what I have read, your art related to the stories is excellent and definitely captures the feeling
