Description
Mandelbulb 3D v1.8.9 x2: www.fractalforums.com/index.ph…DEcombinate in Min mode using: TorusHMVoidIFS/CylinderHeightmapIFS/x3 SphereHMVoidIFS
An imagining of a 'toroidal' world, constructed by some long vanished, ultra-advanced alien civilisation.
The huge habitat is now occupied by a multitude of sentient species, and serves as a meeting place
and home for races of all types.
I'd like to think that had the SF author, the late Iain M. Banks continued to write his 'Culture' novels, he
may have come up with something like this. He did like to think big after all!
My thanks to Luca (dark-beam) for his stalwart work in creating his new 'HeightmapVoid' dIFS formulae
which allow one to actually venture inside these objects!

Bit of a tricky one to map Yury, but I got there in the end! Cheers!

Awesome!
It reminds me of an SF story/book where the people's percerption is twisted into seeing the world as a kind of hyperboloid and they need to stay away from the extremes because of their power source. Don't remember the title.

Sounds intriguing; pity you can't recall the title though.... Thanks for commenting!

Thanks for the motivation to try extra hard
I didn't remember title or author but it was a part of a publisher's collection of certain SF books and I remembered the title of another book therein, then found a list of all books of the collection and re-discovered it among them:
Inverted World by Christopher Priest
(German: Der steile Horizont - part of Bibliothek der Science Fiction Literatur which contains a lot of SF pearls of the past.)

Darnit!! Sorry for my late reply, I'm really terrible at keeping up with
comments here sometimes!
I'm sure I read Priest's 'Inverted World' many, many moons ago. But I don't think
it involved a 'toroidal' world as such. Good read though as I recall, and like most
of his work, had a seriously weird premise....

Heh, no sweat I tend to be late, can take months...
Right, it's about aspects of the world being hyperbolic. A toroidal world would be much weirder. It's just, seeing the (apparent) land & sea in such a form reminded me...
A toroid might not not too bad an idea for a space station and/or a habitat, but such a thing would look quite different

This is one of those times where an image makes me think too much. It appears to be a star ship but where is it going to go? And if it folds space to go somewhere, wouldn't it just turn the toroidal world inside out?
A truly brilliant piece, if it only didn't make me think...

Well, you can't see them from this altitude Mann, but there are a multitude of
entrance and exit apertures which lead to the outside, down on the surface....
Glad to have got your little grey cells working mate, and thanks!!

Aha. What was I thinking? Of course.
But it's a little scarey when those little hamster wheels get moving...

superb Mark i'm sure IMB would have loved it , makes me wonder if it orbits through the torus

Cheers Tim! I'd like to think he'd have been tickled by the idea.
Erm, if what orbits through the torus? Damn google translate!

It seems like a"trou de ver"? Or else an toroidal universe?

MarkJayBee In reply to Loki7z [2015-03-24 15:35:35 +0000 UTC]
Well, more of a toroidal planet Florian - a whole universe would be 'stretching' things a bit, don't you think?! Thanks!

So glad you like it Luca! It was certainly a 'fiddle' building and positioning that ship, but I think it works ok.
I'll definitely be exploring the creative potential of your HMVoids more....

I suggest you to try toroidal checkerboards!

With some attempts doable Mark

Not sure if that's really my style Luca? Actually I did try a few linear patterned maps on
the torus interior, and found some distortions and 'overlaps' occuring. This happened on the
spheres too, which is why the surface patterning is not perhaps as clear as I'd have liked.

Yes, it's hard to find a good looking pattern Mark. I tried with not too satisfactory results
