Description Mandelbulb 3D v1.9.0 ALPHA1

DEcombinate in Min mode using: SphereHeightMapIFS (x3)/_PolyFold-sym/ABoxPlatinum/Sierpinski3/_boxtiling/_reciprocalY3
The extra formula slots in the latest update to MB3D came in very useful here!

Inspired by Hal Tenny's wonderful formula combo, as used in his 'Imagination Destination' www.deviantart.com/art/Imagina…
My thanks to Bernard Bittler - 'loboto' for kindly sharing his excellent heightmap which I used on the 'ships'.

This is an imagining of the vast habitat 'Tier' from the SF novel 'Excession'  by Iain M. Banks . Below is an excerpt from the novel describing Tier:

"Tier was a stepped habitat; it's nine levels all revolved at the same speed, but that meant that the outer tiers possessed greater apparent gravity than those near the center.
The levels themselves were sectioned into compartments up to hundreds of kilometers long and filled with atmospheres of different types and held at different temperatures, while stunningly complicated and dazzlingly beautiful arrays of mirrors and mirrorfields situated within the staggered cone of the world's axis provided amounts of sunlight precisely timed, attenuated and where necessary altered in wavelength to mimic the conditions on a hundred different worlds for a hundred different species.

The environmental diversity and civilizational co-dependence it implied, and intermingling it encouraged had been Tier's raisond'etre, the very foundation of it's purpose and fame for the seven thousand years it had existed. Its original builders were, perhaps, unknown; they were believed to have Sublimed shortly after building it, leaving behind a species or model - depending on how you defined these things - of biomechanical sintricate which ran and maintained the place...."

A larger version of this piece can be viewed, and prints ordered at: markjaybeefractal.com/tier/

*Update 24/3/17: You can now view an interactive 360° panoramic version of 'Tier' on my sites at: markjaybeefractal.com/tier-pan… and: mjb-graphics.co.uk/tier-panora…    Enjoy!!

Do you sell royalty-free licenses for use as part of a book cover? I design book covers for several SF authors (and others) and would, of course, provide proper attribution.

If you sell on one of the royalty-free stock repositories, please let me know which ones and your username.

Thanks!

I have sold licenses for my work in the past Donna.
Perhaps you could note me with some details of your offer?

Ehrm, I did actually ask you to 'note' me your proposal Donna, as I do not generally conduct business 'in public'.
Perhaps a little 'C/P' is called for?

Nice one man! Love it. Reminds me of some sort of steampunk city with blimps flying around (despite it being for a sci fi world). Have you ever considered incorporating 3d modelling into your scenes? I dont know if that's possible or not but a few recognisable human elements here or there could really ground these pieces in reality. I would love to see something like that

MarkJayBee In reply to RhysGriffiths [2015-05-02 13:15:43 +0000 UTC]

One of these days I'm going to seriously knuckle down and start creating
using either 'true' 3D modelling, or digital painting techniques, as I'd love
to have a more human element in my pieces.
However, as I'm creating these works with a purely fractal program,
which doesn't really allow the practical export of meshes, that somewhat
limits me in that area.
I guess I could start inserting elements using PS, but then I might as well
just go the whole hog and paint the whole scene digitally! See above!!
Thanks for your comment Rhys, and glad you like my work!

RhysGriffiths In reply to MarkJayBee [2015-05-09 12:41:56 +0000 UTC]

That sounds like a good idea man. I think it could mesh together with your fractal stuff very well. If you just matched the camera and lighting in 3d then you could composite the 3d and fractal together and it would look very natural.
And painting digitally is a long journey. Perhaps using some matte painting techniques over the top of your mandelbulb renders is an approach that could yield results without having to spend years learning to paint That's how I started out too.
There is a great Gnomon DVD by Raphael Lacoste on Matte Painting if you're interested, I'm sure you can find a way to get your hands on it and it's full of juicy information that will give you a great starting point!

Really cool concept and you picked a dope passage to base it off of. I don't think I would have been able to visualize it because it is a bit abstract, but bravo you pulled it off. It all purrdy

Thanks very much for commenting Trevor; I'm most gratified that you feel that I've
pulled it off in such a 'purrdy' way!!

(I may have another one from this 'exploration' coming soon, so watch this space?)
