Description
‘Empiricist’ is based on a scene from SF author Iain M. Banks ‘s ‘Culture’ novel, ‘The Hydrogen Sonata ‘. This privately commissioned illustration
depicts the 200km long GSV – General System Vehicle – ‘Empiricist’ and its attendant entourage of ships approaching the planet Zyse to celebrate
the forthcoming ‘Subliming’ of the indigenous Gzilt race.
I heartily recommend reading this novel, definitely one of IMB’s best Culture stories!
For those Culture purists out there, please note that this is my interpretation of the ‘Empiricist’ – involving some serious artistic license! – and not a
slavish depiction of IMB’s description in the novel.

I thought this pic was reminiscent of C. Foss's work, which evoked a satisfying feeling of nostalgia in me, THEN I see that it's representing a scene from a book of one of my FAVORITE authors??
Instant-FAVE and WATCH!!...I really need to start in on that book. I think there's only two I haven't read, in the "Culture" series anyhow...Here's to hoping the 'Affront' don't pop-by and try to liven things up eh?

When a two hundred kilometer long battle-wagon and attendant escorts shows up at you home planet, I'm guessing someone got the joyous news that they've been chosen as this year's sacrifice to the deities.
"I say, old thing, here's a few hundred teratons of party favors! Huzzah!"
