Description
On April 18, 1942 sixteen B-25B Mitchell bombers launched from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet in a surprise attack on the Japanese mainland. Initially the bombers flew in groups of 2 to 4 but then flew singly at wave top level to avoid detection. The aircraft began arriving about noon over Tokyo and dropped special incendiary bombs. Although the raid caused little damage it achieved success in bringing the war to the Japanese home islands and boosted American morale after the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor. This print commemorates the 76th anniversary of the Doolittle Raid. Prints are available through my website www.markkarvon.net.Related content

Any lower and they would have needed torpedo tubes and a periscope....
Great image.
Just a side note I was watching some documentaries a bt ago..In One of them they pointed out that after the Doolittle raids the Japanese higher up demanded a change in strategy and deployment...which ultimately led to a series of defeats and the loss loss of initiative/impetusΒ for the Japanese armed forces.Β

Well earned Favourite, for the aircraft itself never mind how realistic the low level is (and I have been nearly this low over water arriving at my local airport).

I read that Tojo himself saw one of Doolittle's planes while on a flight near Tokyo.

Thank you. This one took me about 40 hours but I converted my earlier B-25 painting so I did not have to do a completely new painting. I was able to convert the earlier piece into a B-25B and paint a new background.

Whew this is great! So many things that you really nailed Mark. My favorite has to be the aircraft shadow on the swells.Β

"At Pearl they hit us with a Sledgehammer. This attack, will be nothing more than a pin prick... but it will be straight through their hearts"
~ Lt. Col James "Jimmy" Doolittle, from "Pearl Harbor"
The attack that sent the message to Japan "You are not invincible", and showed just what our resolve to win was. The physical damage was repaired within months, but the psychological damage lasted until the first B-24 Liberators launched from bases in China to bomb targets in Japan. When the B-29s began launching their raids, the writing was on the wall, and on the mornings of August 6th, and August 9th, 1945, the final nails in the Coffin that the Imperial Japanese Empire made for itself was hammered in.
As Admiral Yamamoto is attributed to saying "I fear that all we have done is awoken a sleeping giant, and filled him with a terrible resolve"

As a further indication of the kind of enemy Japan was, almost a quarter million Chinese were killed by the Japanese as punishment for aiding the American flyers.

The a-bombs were well deserved.
