Yea, though I fly through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil.... For I am 80,000 feet and climbing.

Great position of the Blackbird in the painting! Coming slightly towards you, engines roaring, looking fierce, defiant, strong, and 'untouchable' XD. But then when combined with the background, reveals a different side; of grace and beauty. Amazing!

Hey, I want to let you know I used this piece of art as reference for a "flash fiction month" challenge. [link] What I wrote probably isn't anywhere near the quality of this piece, but it was fun to work on.

Oh wow! This is wonderful....
I've been wanting to paint/draw this guy for a while now. In the mid-80's I worked on the ground image processing system for these guys!
Incredible Plane. As you say -- Untouchable! (even in retirement)

I heard only the Poland and some neighbour USSR's republics could shot it down, with their modified S-200 "Vega" rockets. Why were there so special? Well, because they were fast, but old. They couldn't be fooled by any active or passive systems of American aircrafts. SR-71 was passing over Poland for a couple of times, but no actions were ever taken against him. One man saw it flying at the altitude of 28.000 km with a speed of 2.600 km/h (I suppose all he saw were the vapour trails).
But this may be just a legend of proud rocket designers...

By the late 1950's surface-to-air missiles were being fitted with nuclear warheads which could have been fatal to the SR-71 which is probably why it was never flown over USSR territory.

Never looked at that in this way Altough I don't think USSR would use a nuclear warhead just to bring down enemy airplane. Bomber formation sent with nuclear retaliation maybe, but a single plane? This would surely trigger a nuclear war, maybe at the moment USSR would not have been prepared for it.

It wouldn't have started a war if the soviets had detonated it over their own territory.

Hmm, I wouldn't be so sure... Anyway it would certainly start some retaliations, ecconomical, political or maybe military at small scale. Truth is, we don't know what was really sitting in the minds of military commanders of Cold War. Note that both MacArthur and Zedong tried to persuade the leaders of USA and USSR to use nuclear bombs during Korean War, but nor Truman, nor Stalin permitted them to do so, knowing that this will start an all-out war. Later on, any event - plane shootdown, testing of new weapon, supporting any sides during local conflicts - could become casus belli.

I was in high school during the Cuban Missile Crisis. We didn't know if each day would be our last.

One of the coolest airplanes ever made. I bet they've got something even more wicked flying now. Aurora maybe?

The thing that really struck me about this beast, is how big it is. It is a most impressive machine, that can only be truly appreciated when seen in person.

it is a big airplane. I tried to show it from a more unusual perspective.
