Description
The YB-49 was a jet powered development of the propeller driven XB-35 and YB-35 Flying Wing designs. Its first flight took place on October 22, 1947. There were three aircraft built in total.During testing the airplane it set an unofficial endurance record for remaining above 40,000 feet altitude for 6.5 hours. The airplane also showed a small radar cross section. The second aircraft was unfortunately lost on June 5, 1948 when it suffered structural failure in flight. All crew members perished.
On February 9, 1949, the first YB-49 flew from Muroc AFB in California to Andrews AFB near Washington DC. The trip was made in 4 hours and 29 minutes. This print is a depiction of that flight.
Knowledge and experience gained from the XB-35, YB-35 and YB-49 Flying Wing programs proved valuable decades later when the B-2 was designed and developed.
Prints are available through my website, www.markkarvon.com.

I wonder how much of the Horten H IX concept went in this.

Very minimal to nothing at all. Work on the YB-35 and the YB-49 started before the war began. Two of the YB-35s were actually converted from prop to jet engines. Jack Northrop deserves far more credit for pushing the flying wing design than the Nazis.

The Horten Brothers started their work in the 30's. But if we really dig deep we find a Junkers patent from before the Great War.
But I really think there should be no "competition" between who designed and built which war machine first...

At first I thought those were individual planes on the wings like an aerial aircraft carrier, that would be an interesting idea though

It played a star role in the movie "War of the Worlds".Β If it had fly-by-wire technology during its time of development, it could have stayed in service instead of Boeing's B-52

I've seen concept for a possible passenger version of the Flying Wing.Β A pity it wasn't followed up.

If they had made the passenger version, it would probably have saved alot of fuel. Which would have lead to cheaper air fare, and we can't have that now can we?. Would you really have wanted a future where you wheren't crammed in like a sardine and treated badly?

If memory serves me right the TU from Delft was/is(?) recently involved in new flying wing designs for passenger aircraft(s). Thing is, you don't just put a new aircraft into production like that. Hmmm, let me see...
Ah!

Don't excpect it to fly before 2040, IF! it ever gets that far.

Is that an attempt at the "blended wing" concept?Β I always wanted to see more effort go in that direction.Β Β

If I remember correctly, the Flying Wing had an appearance in the movie version of 'The War of the Worlds' which came out in 1953.

Correct.Β It also made a brief appearance in 1964's "The Incredible Mr. Limpet".
