Description
A small paleoart contest was held among the members of the Facebook group Cafè Paleontologico. The subject had been chosen thanks to a survey, from which the "Velociraptor vs Protoceratops" option had emerged (I remember being slightly disappointed by the result as there were other choices that I considered much more interesting, but I was still satisfied). This was my entry.
I had no intention of redrawing the almost abused duel inspired by the famous fossil, so I opted for this version. The two animals are not specifically Velociraptor and Protoceratops, but a generic velociraptorinae ready to feast on its prey in this safe elevated branch, a young protoceratopsid with a mimetic striped pattern similar to that of young boars and ratites. Since the drawing was made in a university's study room without references, general proportions and anatomy of both the animals is probably slightly wrong and should not be considered with too serious scientific rigor.
The vegetation is inspired by the study "Early Cretaceous Flora of Mongolia" (Krasilov, 1982). The environment is supposed to be a sparse gimnosperm forest with an undergrowth of ferns and cycadeoids. Featuring in this case are Araucaria mongolica (very speculative since I could not find any pic of the fossil), one of the three Ginkgoites mongolensis morphotypes and a very generic bennettitales.
