Not everyone is the same. Some are a little different than others. I have been called retarded more times than I can count, for just liking things like ponies and pokemon. Just because this person CAN act like an animal they like doesn't mean they're stupid, or weird, or anything. They're gifted.

I don't think the journal here is suppose to be the exact one he uses in Gravity Falls, (cause...it's white) I think this is just to give an idea about why the hand symbol is on the journal(s) he does use when he's an adult. And the one he has here is like the very first journal he used period (cause before he just had a notepad), so the red journals for GF come later.
