My late grandparents had a 6 year age difference with my grandmother being older than my grandfather. This makes the age difference on the show look like nothing.

People get married with 10 year age gaps, so that's not really the problem, it's his age. He's 13 and she's 16. Think about that for a second. How about this, you wouldn't bat an eye if a 30 year old married a 38 year old (diff= 8), but a 11 year old dating a 14 year old (diff= "only" 3)....yikes. It's just creepy and weird.Β

That's true. My parents actually do have an 8 yr age difference and no one finds anything wrong with that... but of course when my father was 16 and my mom was 8 it would have been weird. (they hadn't met then though)

Yes, exactly. What's socially akward in this case is that usually it is more acceptable for the boy to be older than vice versa but yes the age difference here is insignificant if they grow up.
