I think he simply a nice guy to everyone except the Northwests. He even forgave the family after Pacifica did open the gate.

Well he had no problems turning all the people in the mansion into wood (even thougt he knew that Dipper was just another victim of Prestons games).
But he isnt a bad guy, spirits of vengeance are known to being blinded by anger. I really loved the morals this episode gave.
1. You should never judge a person from your first view (what Dipper did with pacifica).
2. You are more than the result of your ancestors and just because they did terrible things in the past dont mean you have to repeat them.
