Description
This is my only surviving drawing from my art school entrance portfolio, and my first drawing from life. I used a mirror and tried to hold the pose.. i had more hair then and less waistline.Related content

How in the world did you sit still long enough to draw this? How long did it take? It turned out very nicely

It turned out really well
We had to do a self portrait in one of my art classes using cardboard, tape and white paint showing the planes of the face. Needless to say...mine did not turn out nearly as well as yours

wow, that sounds quite a challenge, but it's good to do. I always say that half the learning is in the observation and the other half in the rendering, so if it teaches one to look and understand then it's useful

I was going to comment on how you don't look college-aged in this, but I just read below you were 28. That's great you went back to school at that age! Most people wouldn't dare anymore once they're used to having a job and money!
Old work or not, I still think it's great. Although your style is different now, I can't really find fault with this! The pose and stretched skin is just great! Makes it a really compelling portrait!

Yes i gave up the selling my soul career path, i hated it. i would rather be poor than do that again. Got to make this pay again because it's the only thing i'm half good at

Good for you. Most people just stick with what they've chosen, even if they hate it!
Art won't ever make you rich (which I know from experience), but you know what they say: As long as you do what you like, you'll never have to work a day in your life!

28 when i went back to school again. It's easy to get wrapped up in portfolio mode and forget the basics. Lose the grids, tracings and measuring every now and then and exercise your hand eye co ordination to help keep them sharp or you end up forgetting or getting rusty like i did. Time to start doing it again i think. It will be interesting to see just how bad i have got

When I first saw it I thought that it looks a lot rougher than your other drawings and not as good.
But now I have so much respect for you (not that I didn't before ). This is really great, especially for a first drawing from life and a self portrait.
I also really like the pose, the hand was a great idea. It makes it to more than just a simple portrait.

Thank you, I was chatting with another artist who said it would be nice to do some exercises for the benefit of the inexperienced students who wish to learn. He made a good point of not just using DA as a portfolio but to have other works on as well which benefit others who wish to learn from the more experienced. I then went and dragged a load of old student work out. i am very fond of this one, it started it all. It's just under 20 yrs old now. The hand was done like that because it helped to keep my head in place with minimal movement. I do remember having a sore elbow after though. Its amazing how the pic looks like it's my right hand when in fact it's my left

That is so true. I mean it is great to see all the amazing finished artworks but to see wips and things like this really helps me, and I'm sure others too, to learn and get better. With the technique and with ideas.
Wow 20 years. I'm drawing now for about 5 years, I really hope that I will still draw in 15 years. I can't wait to see how my stuff will look then.
lol It must be really strange to draw a selfportrait with a mirror. Maybe it's best not to think too much about what's right and left.

I always found it difficult to do self-portraits for so many reasons. Hopefully you were very kind to yourself throughout the process (as much as you should be now regardless of waistline!)
Love the shading and textures of the skin. The fingers and eyes are particularly wonderful. Very crisp, clean work on the pupils and irises as well. Beautiful work!

Thank you, i treat it with care and respect as it helped me get into art college. It's not something i would have put on DA but it does show how far i have come and what i have learned since then. I am thinking of doing a self portrait from life again, it's now on my to do list. Have forgot the basic skills because i have not done any for a while. To wrapped up in trying to do beautiful drawings instead. So i have made a folder for sketches and drawing exercises and i intent to start using it... soon ... hopefully.
