That's because we all knew that it was an inferior copy of "Pokemon", so we all stuck with "Pokemon". We were all too busy watching "Pokemon" to watch "Digimon".
By the way, as a "Pokemon" fan: Doug's review of "The First Movie" (AKA "Mewtwo Strikes Back") is HILARIOUS. It really shows what our parents thought of the whole deal. Besides, I agree with him: "Pokemon are meant to fight, but not like this" is a pretty fucked up moral. Either Pokemon are meant to fight, or they aren't. I also agreewith him that Ash being brought back from the dead with Pokemon tears is cliched and lazy.

The games were way inferior sure, but I question people's nostalgia for Pokemon if anything Ash has went through is better than the Tamers season.
It abandoned the point of selling the merchandise outright and made it an actually dark and in-depth show for kids.
The villain was even just a horrifying mutation of a program doing its job, fueled by the bitterness and depression of a girl who's Digimon is DEAD, lost her mother, couldn't accept her stepmother, and even had her hand puppet demonically telling her to KILL HERSELF.

Not sure which side you're on, but after watching this review, I couldn't tell who the main character was in Digimon. It just jumped back and forth, at least the Pokemon movie wasn't so confusing and stuck to one story.
Also, the "villains"(using that term very loosely) in Pokemon, Team Rocket, in my opinion made the show. Ash was kind of dull.
But if you want me to list why I think Pokemon is better than Digimon:
1. Digimon was a cheap rip off.
2. The "mon" after everything got REALLY annoying.
3. At not all of the Pokemon talk. I love Meowth (he's my favorite), but if all of the Pokemon talked it would be so annoying.
4. This is a very in the moment answer (when I was in elementary school), the cool kids only liked Pokemon.
5. Charizard.

You might as well base the original Dragonball (not Z),
Super Mario Bros, and Street Fighter on their movies then.
Besides, none of that has to do with the show itself except the first part
which spoils how they're able to get Digimon in the first place.

That's Adventure, the season the first half of the movie is based on.
Jokes get corny like the movie but outside evolution, monsters, and such, the shows are only alike in the fact its an adventure.
Though on 5, Renamon and Terriermon from Tamers (he was also the green rabbit in the 2nd half) are the coolest monsters I know. Though Renamon has this horrendous furry fanbase....
