Description
NOTE: This is my revised and revamped map for a Code Geass fanfiction that I will make in the future, perhaps on Sufficient Velocity. This map is influenced and inspired by RoyalPsycho's Code Geass maps: "Cornelia of the Reformation" and "One Delayed Death". Everything else is influenced a bit by my current TL project, "To Rebuild a Shattered World".Although this map is inspired by "To Rebuild a Shattered World", the main departure from the TL is that the Savonarolan Reformation becomes unsuccessful, leading to a harsher and more brutal crackdown on the Savonarolan movement, and the nation responsible for fostering such a movement, the Kingdom of France, is divided and partitioned, depriving them of their Mediterranean coastline. Another one is the death of Edward Plantagenet, the 17th Earl of Warwick, due to his execution because of his failed escape with Perkin Warbeck, leaving the Plantagenet line in the hands of Margaret Pole and her descendants.
The long tragedy of the Tudor dynasty began with the death of Elizabeth of York when she gave birth to the infant Prince Henry, who subsequently died a few hours after his mother did. Consequently, the House of Tudor would become extinct when Henry VII himself died in 1509, leading to a deadly power struggle that culminated in the rise of the House of Pole, and its successor dynasties, the House of Hastings and the House of Britannia. A different Duke Henry who became TTL's Henry VIII, was only a child when he rose to power, leaving the real power broker in England at the hands of Margaret Pole, his mother. As Henry VIII Pole would also die without any surviving children, his older sister Catherine Pole would succeed him, but the next true king would be Francis I of England, of the House of Hastings. The House of le Bretan, later renamed to House of Britannia, had its origins in the Duchy of Brittany, where a political refugee named Charles le Bretan, had cultivated his family's rise to prominence in England through his allegiance to the House of Hastings, and with the betrothal of Duchess Anne Hastings to him, the union between the Hastings and le Bretan families became complete.
Despite the massive suppression of the Savonarolists in Continental Europe, and England's continued allegiance to the Holy See, underneath the surface, the religious and political refugees who fled from France and the Low Countries, and even member states of the Holy Roman Empire had congregated in England. Although religious tolerance was promulgated during the reigns of both Francis I and his successor, George I of England, it was not until the reign of the physically inept Henry IX Hastings that the real path to a religious revolution in England would begin with the rise of Elizabeth Stanley as England's first reigning Queen (TTL's version of Elizabeth I Tudor). Under Elizabeth I, or Elizabeth the Passionate, as her admirers called her, the religious reformation erupted into a revolution not seen since the failed Savonarolist Reformation. Allied to Elizabeth the Passionate was a minor Welsh monk by the name of Samuel Gwyn, who rose to fame when he publicly denounced the corruption within the English Catholic Church and reaffirmed the teachings of Girolamo Savonarola. The Gwynite Revolution was far bloodier and more brutal than the Savonarolist movement in France, largely because of the covert spread of those radical ideas that led to France's downfall. Unlike France though, England would survive the so-called Time of Troubles when in 1612 Elizabeth the Passionate was assassinated by Catholic agents sent by Rome. An invasion by the Holy Roman Empire and Spain had brought the fear of Catholic occupation of the British Isles, leaving the resistance movement in the hands of the first ruler from the House of le Bretan, Prince Richard le Bretan, from his base in York. After three years of Catholic occupation, the heroic Prince Richard drove out the Catholic occupiers and restored the monarchy in England, starting the longest dynasty in British and later Britannian history.
The le Bretan dynasty of England was relatively late in the colonization of the New World, with the first establishment of the English colony in the Penobscot River region. However, Prince Richard, or King Richard IV le Bretan, implemented a series of recovery based programs that built England's domestic industries and allowed them to compete on the world stage. Piracy against the Spanish Empire resulted in the delivery of Spanish gold and silver to England's coffers, and its access to territories once claimed and controlled by France but are under the control of French exiles allowed England to gain access to the wealth of the Orient. King Richard IV also laid his claim on the Scottish crown, though his marriage to the daughter of the last Scottish king, and upon the last King of Scotland's death, Richard IV effectively became King of Scotland as well. It was not until the reign of his grandson William II le Bretan in the 1700s that England, Scotland, and later in 1721, the Irish statelets, would form the Kingdom of Great Britain. Great Britain however, was still in danger from the threat emitted by the Holy Roman Empire, which had now devolved into two separate kingdoms for two different linguistic groups: the Germanic speaking peoples of the north and the Italic speaking peoples of the south. Such a division played a crucial role in the emergence of the European Continental Alliance, which in reality was a theocratic federation controlled by the Papacy. Due to the Catholic menace, Richard IV le Bretan and his successors would aggressively build their new colonies in North America (here, Amerigo Vespucci survives), with the permanent capital of Pendragon built in the late 1790s, but wasn't declared the new capital until 1865.
Meanwhile, in Asia, a larger involvement of daimyos in the western regions of Japan in the Wokou raids in the Chinese and Korean coasts had expanded to include the entirety of the Ryukyu Kingdom, which was targeted by the Ming dynasty. Not content with just holding down the Ryukyuans, the Ming would also consolidate the island of Taiwan as a part of China, but constant raids from the Mongols and a short lived Dzunghar conquest of western China had dragged the country into a disaster in which the Ming literally fell from power with the last Ming emperor jumping to his death from the walls of the Forbidden City, allowing a prominent warlord to form the Shun Dynasty (different Shun from OTL). The Shun dynasty was far more open towards the outside world, and mercenaries from the Holy Roman Empire have arrived in the new Shun court to modernize much of China's military and economy. In addition, the HRE and the Shun have formed a mutual alliance against the increasingly expansive Russian behemoth, which had taken in as refugees the exiles from the fallen Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Moreover, the Shun had never forgotten Japan's repeated raids into its coasts. Thus in the late 1640s the Shun began to recruit potential spies from within the Japanese lands, primarily the daimyos who held their domains in the islands of Kyushu and Shikoku. Those daimyos who were unwittingly reduced to Shun puppets formed the core of the government in the newly established Chinese Protectorate of Zhenxi, or the Western Region protectorate.
Fast forward to 2017 a.t.b.:
The world is split into three competing blocs, although there might have been as big as five blocs, if Russia and the two French successor states count as great powers. The three main ones that are officially recognized are: the European Continental Alliance, the Holy Britannian Empire, and the Pan-Asian Alliance. Two other ones that are not officially recognized are the Francophonie and the Orthodox Union (Greater Russia without Ukraine and Belarus). However, the other two minors are officially recognized as allies of Britannia.
The Holy Britannian Empire has constantly reorganized itself along militaristic lines, although the legacy of the Gwynite Revolution resulted in a Britannian flavored version of Caesaropapism, or King over Pope. Likewise, Caesaropapism has also manifested in the Kingdom of Nouvelle Provence, and in the Russian Empire. An influential thinker, philosopher and one time tutor of one of the Britannian princes, a certain Charles Darwin, has developed a radical ideology called Palingenesian Absolutism, in which national rebirth can only be achieved through ruthless autocracy, with no tolerance for radical left-wing ideologies. Palingenesian Absolutism also emphasizes the necessity of incentives and rewards for anyone who excelled in whatever professions they hold, but low achievers could find themselves marginalized very quickly. Most Palingenesian Absolutist societies thrive on ruthless competition, be it in individuals or groups, with no room for equal outcome. In addition, Britannia and its allies had also developed a keen interest in the legacy of the long dead Byzantine Empire, often adopting some of its political systems, laws and even a few of its aristocratic system. Because both Britannia and New Provence were influenced by the legacies of Savonarola and Gwyn, most of their ideas were enshrined into their laws. As the claimant and holder of the title of "Third Rome", Russia borrowed even more from the old Byzantine system, and in the 1870s, the October Restoration had introduced to Russia the current systems used in Britannia. Now both Britannia and Russia are laying their claims on the Roman-Byzantine legacies, which infuriates Catholic Europe.
Speaking of Catholic Europe, the ECA is ironically the weakest out of the superpowers, despite its head start in the colonization of the New World. Although they are financially powerful due to the close integration of European Jews into European society, the shadow of the Vatican prevents any progress from advancing, except in areas of the military and culture. Officially, the seat of the ECA is in Rome (where the Vatican is also located), but the real seat of power is in Vienna, because the Holy Roman Empire was centralized under the authority of the Archduchy of Austria. The three main powers of the ECA are the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, informally called the German Empire, or the German Reich, the Empire of Italy (which in reality is edging closer towards theocracy), and the Kingdom of Spain, or Hispania. These three major powers once fought a series of wars with England and its successors, Great Britain and finally, the Holy Britannian Empire. Although the ECA member states have formal rulers, ultimately the Pope in Rome has the final word. The overbearing nature of the Papacy has resulted in the growing anti-Vatican sentiment, particularly in nations like Serbia and Bulgaria, as well as Greece. In one of the plans made by both Britannia and Russia, the Balkans would become a condominium for their influence, with a reconstructed new Byzantine Empire, or the Holy Empire of Rumelia, as it is officially called. The Romanian nations though, are also stuck between the Papacy and Russia, although they are not comfortable with where the two outsider nations are going.
The Pan-Asian Alliance is the largest superpower in terms of population and military, although in reality the Empire of the Great Shun calls the shots. Unlike its German counterpart, the Great Shun Chinese state have taken advantage of its sheer population size to establish various colonies throughout the Asia-Pacific region, and its seizure and control of the former Ryukyu Kingdom has allowed the PAA to project its power into the rest of the world. It has also combined Palingenesian Absolutism with various Populist ideas to ensure that it is stable enough to survive, but radical extremists on both sides are gathering power in order to overthrow their increasingly benign government. Officially, the PAA consisted of China, India and Persia, as well as Indonesia, but even the other two major powers are resentful of China's domineering attitude, and the Chinese state hated having to share power with their geopolitical rivals. It also doesn't help that the Eight Eunuchs are resorting to draconian measures in order to suppress the people's anger there.
In terms of the political compass, the Pan-Asian Alliance would be on the center left, the European Continental Alliance on the hard-right (Catholic Conservatism could not be reconciled with extreme ideologies of the right in this case), and the Holy Britannian Empire would be on the far-right. Only the two Francophone successor states would be considered in the center.
During the heydays of the Shogunate in Japan, various shoguns and daimyos have kept their lands open to trade with the outside world. However, one greedy daimyo who secretly controlled a large group of Wokou pirates have authorized their raids into the Chinese and Korean coasts, and with the Wokou making the Ryukyu Kingdom their base, it gave the Shun's predecessor, the Ming, an excuse to invade and annex the tiny kingdom, putting an end to what it appeared to be a thassalocratic state that relied on trade with its neighbors. With the Ryukyu Kingdom under Chinese control, the Ming and Shun would respectively launch three major wars against the Japanese state, often resulting in a stalemate in all three engagements. It was not until the 1700s when the Akechi Shogunate had started to weaken due to competing daimyos in the west and in the northeast that the Shun would team up with the rising Russian state to take slices of Japanese territory. When Britannia first expanded into Asia in the 1750s, it was content with acquiring a trading port in the region of Edo, later known as Tokyo. However, the interest in the silver trade, plus a growing alliance with Russia against the ECA, which had began to treat the Shun as its major non-Christian ally, forced Britannia deeper into Japanese affairs, culminating in the series of partitions: the First Japanese Partition of 1791 had secured for the Shun the entirety of Kyushu, Britannia the Kanto region, and Hokkaido went to Russia. The Second Japanese Partition of 1796 involved only Britannia and China, with the Britannians acquiring southern Kansai region and China acquiring the entirety of the Chugoku region in western Honshu and the entirety of Shikoku. The Third and Final Japanese Partition would not occur until 1853 when an attempted uprising in the occupied territories against Britannian rule had resulted in the intervention by the three powers. Even Russia got involved in what was now called the Uprising of 1853, when a Russian diplomat was murdered in the streets of Edo that they began to occupy most of the Tohoku region. Upon the recommendation of Britannia, Russia would be granted all of the Tohoku region, while China would keep Kyushu and Shikoku, and Britannia would keep the rest. Various Japanese Uprisings were often put down with such brutality that it resulted in the emigration of Japanese civilians to either the ECA or the Ottoman Empire.
The Chinese Protectorate of Zhenxi is the portion of Japan annexed by the Shun Dynasty. Most of its daimyo were reduced to Shun vassals, and often chafed under their rule. Opposing daimyo who defied the authority of the Shun Emperor were often killed, and their families were also killed as well. Zhenxi's society is heavily influenced by the mainland, as Chinese merchants and settlers often congregated in various cities of Zhenxi. Nagasaki, Kagoshima and Fukuoka are the three main cities of Zhenxi where the Chinese have their biggest presence. Japanese culture in Zhenxi was targeted for rigid Sinicization, but without success. Discrimination against the locals may not be as rampant as discrimination in the Britannian Protectorate of Satsuma and Choshu, but a lingering sense of Sinophobia runs rampant among the Japanese population of Zhenxi. Japanese writing is mainly preserved, because the Chinese settlers have understood only the Japanese kanji script, but Mandarin and Hokkien are often spoken among the Chinese.
The Britannian Protectorate of Satsuma and Choshu is the portion of Japan annexed by Britannia. Unlike the daimyo under the control of the Shun, the daimyo under Britannian rule have been co-opted into Britannian society, though mutual distrust lingers between the two peoples. It is in the Britannian controlled territories of Japan that the Japanese uprisings would break out the most, and the Britannian colonial authorities there have responded by forced deporations of Japanese rebels to far flung territories of the Holy Britannian Empire, except the Homeland itself. The largest Japanese diaspora within the Holy Britannian Empire is actually found in the Duchy of New Strathclyde, where the assimilated New Strathclydese population found themselves at the mercy of the Japanese deportees. However, Japanese culture is preserved within Britannian Japan, but only because they wanted to showcase to the world the diversity of cultures within their empire. Britannian settlements mainly pop up in cities like Tokyo, Nagoya, Hiroshima and Osaka, but they are built in the style of a Britannian city, compared to the modestly looking Japanese towns. Segregation is heavily enforced in areas under Britannian rule, but Britannian colonial authorities there have implemented a series of incentives that would give the Japanese people under their rule some form of tranquility. The Japanese inside Britannian Japan are known to be bilingual, often speaking Japanese and English, with a few Dutch speakers.
The Russian Protectorate of Ezochi, or the Kingdom of Ezo, is the portion of Japan annexed by Russia. Though the other two entities have suffered from foreign occupation, none could compare to the Japanese population under Russian rule. The daimyos of Ezochi were pressured into converting to Christianity of the Eastern Orthodox branch, and a distinct, Ezochi culture is flourishing in Russian-occupied Japan. To the Japanese inside Ezochi, the Russians proved to be the harshest, and to encourage the development of Ezochi, Russian peasants and noble families alike are enticed to come and settle in Ezochi. However, the biggest wave of immigrants who came to call Ezochi their home were actually from Korea, Manchuria and Siberia. It didn't matter what race they were, as long as they were Christian, though the Russian authorities of Ezochi tolerated the presence of Buddhist monks, and even sent a couple of Buddhist missionaries from the Russian provinces of Kalmykia and Buryatia to help take over the monasteries vacated by Japanese monks who left for Satsuma and Choshu. Ezochi culture became heavily influenced by Russian, Korean, and Tungusic cultures (Tungusic mainly being Manchurian), and the Ezochi language is now written in Cyrillic, Japanese Katakana and Hiragana, and Korean Hangeul (with the Hangeul being used in lieu of Kanji).
Characters and their lives (completely different):
Tianzi is the current reigning Empress of the Shun, though real power lies with the Eight Eunuchs. However, a growing faction consisting of military officers led by Field Marshal Li Xingke is prepared to launch a coup to topple the Eight Eunuchs and give Tianzi greater authority to rule. Her age is a major factor in the increase of power among the Eight Eunuchs, in which they gladly took advantage of, much to the anger of the local population. She is also hated by the populations of Persia and India for having their autonomy taken away, and their status as "Militarized Zones" only added the fuel to their anger.
Hong Gu is the official Viceroy of Zhenxi, and the real man behind the Shun's administration of the Japanese territories controlled by China. He also works well with his collaborator Atsushi Sawasaki, who has been well known for proposing the idea of reuniting Japan under the influence of the Pan-Asian Alliance. The leaders of Persia and India hoped that a reunited Japan integrated into the PAA would counterbalance Luoyang's hegemony over the rest of the PAA.
Li Xingke is the official "Grand Marshal" of the Pan-Asian Alliance, but due to suffering from tuberculosis, he has been kept under surveillance by his aides in hopes of recovering from the disease. He is also a renowned populist whose speeches denouncing the High Eunuchs have nearly landed him in trouble with the PAA's secret police.
Zhou Xianglin is Xingke's aide and friend. She is the one who keeps tabs on his health, and provides him with much needed medication. When faced with the stark choice between the High Eunuchs and Xingke, she would gladly side with the Grand Marshal. In addition, soldiers who were trained under her command had been garrisoned in Zhenxi.
Schneizel el Britannia is the 99th Britannian Emperor after a freak accident in the Thought Elevator had killed his predecessor, the 98th Britannian Emperor Charles zi Britannia, along with his favorite consort, Marianne vi Britannia. Before his rise to power, an argument between the emperor and Prince Lelouch had resulted not only in the young prince stripped of his titles, but demoted to the rank of commoner. Unknown to Charles, his rash decision had ironically saved Lelouch from the political intrigues of court politics that Britannia is notoriously known for. Despite Schneizel's attempts to reinstate Lelouch into the Royal Family, Lelouch is happy being a commoner.
Cornelia li Britannia is the Vicereine of the Protectorate of Satsuma and Choshu. Before her post in Britannian Japan, she served as the military attache in Russia, overseeing the massive military buildup in both Vladivostok and Russian occupied Sapporo. When two murdered diplomats belonging to Russia and China were found in Tokyo, she became involved in the murder investigation. Her greatest pet peeve is someone entering her office without knocking, annoying her to no end. She is helped by both Gilbert Guildford and Andreas Darlton, though rumors of Guildford being chosen to become the Knight of Two are rife.
Euphemia li Britannia is the Sub-Vicereine of the Protectorate of Satsuma and Choshu, but handles the domestic policies of that region. She is among the few members of the Britannian Royal Family who were disappointed with Lelouch's decision to remain as a commoner, but still supports him. It was under Euphemia's suggestion (though much to Cornelia's annoyance) that the Kururugi clan be integrated into the ranks of Britannian nobility, with Genbu earning the title of Earl. His son Suzaku is being groomed to succeed him, but his preference for the military career had also shocked his own father. The Kururugi clan is being praised as an example of an integrated and assimilated Japanese family into Britannian society, though they have also made a lot of enemies from within Britannian society and within the downtrodden Japanese society.
Clovis la Britannia is the patron of the Camelot Project, an ambitious project that is geared towards the improvement of knightmare frame technology. Lately, his artistic mind has inspired him to create a software system that would allow a knightmare frame to be operational without a pilot, hence the nickname "Knightdrone Project". Currently he's posted in the Duchy of Trans-Appalachia for that purpose.
Marrybell mel Britannia is the Vicereine of New Strathclyde, and the patron of the Glinda Knights. Under her watchful eye, New Strathclyde has seen an increase in the racial tensions between Japanese deportees and New Strathclydese natives, who were much better integrated into Britannian society than their Japanese counterparts. Her job has been made harder by the ever watchful surveillance of PAA warships in the Spratlys, and New Strathclyde has never been much calmer.
Lelouch Lamperouge, formerly Lelouch vi Britannia, adjusted well as a commoner. In fact, with enough savings from his winnings in the underground chess games, he and a mysterious, green haired woman started a network of pizza joints called Mother Cecilia's Pizza (TTL's version of Uncle Fatih's). Mother Cecilia's has become a popular fast food restaurant across Britannia, and his preference for the life of the rich entrepreneur has become the talk of the Britannian Royal Family. His next project is the opening of a new pub in the Tokyo Settlement where his best friend, Rivalz Cardemonde, would work as a full time bartender once he graduates from Ashford Academy. His sympathy towards the downtrodden Japanese people within Britannian Japan has surprisingly earned him a begrudging respect from some of the more vocal xenophobic nationalists and has even struck up a friendship with Naoto and Kallen.
Nunnally vi Britannia is the Sub-Vicereine of New Strathclyde, and has developed a close bond with Marrybell. It was Nunnally who championed the rise of charity groups that handled donations to civilians who were affected by natural disasters. Though she is kept busy by her work, deep down she misses her brother and it was rumored that she was affected the most by Lelouch's banishment and demotion to the rank of commoner. However, there were talks of who would be the bride for Earl Kururugi's son. It would be either Nunnally or Euphemia, much to the annoyance of the other members of the Royal Family.
Milly Ashford is in line to inherit Ashford Corporation, or AshfordCorp, from her parents. As a graduate of the academy that bears their family's name, she is well known for her likeable attitude, even if her penchant for wild antics in organizing school festivals are legendary. Her family has a reputation for luxurious hotels that are catered to tourists and locals, and as a proud heiress, she intends to expand into the restaurant business. Lelouch greatly fears that Mother Cecilia's would be bought by his school friend.
Shirley Fenette is one of the students of Ashford Academy, but has a crush on pizza entrepreneur Lelouch Lamperouge. During their days together in Ashford Academy, it was Shirley who constantly scolded Lelouch for his lack of effort in his school work, but her real story of how she became in love with Lelouch was when he nearly brankrupted himself while trying to save a stray cat and her litter. He offered her one of the kittens as a token of gratitude for her assistance in saving the cats. His culinary skills had also impressed her family to the point where her father genuinely thought of having his daughter marry the young ex-Prince, much to their shock.
Jeremiah Gottwald once served in the Britannian military before a mental breakdown had nearly forced him out through a medical discharge. Just like Guildford, Margrave Gottwald was once selected as a potential candidate for the Knights of the Round before a surprise decision had landed him in the Knights of Saint Raphael, becoming the second in command to Andrea Farnese. He also owns an orange plantation in the Britannian Homeland, where seasonal workers from around the Britannian Empire have come to harvest his oranges.
Kallen Kozuki and her brother Naoto attend a different school outside the Settlement, and while their mother was a commoner, their father Earl Stadfeld, was demoted and stripped of his rank after an OSI raid had revealed his ties to anti-monarchist factions within the Britannian government. At one point, he thought about moving his entire family to Australia as political refugees but decided against it, seeing an opportunity to carry out his political struggle. Naoto on the other hand, is one of the more vocal Japanese who oppose the clans who have been integrated into Britannian society, and at one point he was the bully who picked on Suzaku before a fight between them caused the colonial authorities to step in. He and his friends have now founded their own political movement that agitates for the reunification of the partitioned Japanese territories when the time is right.
Most of the Japanese military personnel were forced to serve their respective overlords. Japanese officers fighting for the Chinese Protectorate of Zhenxi included the five major officers of Zhenxi's Four Holy Swords, while Tatewaki Katase and Josui Kusakabe ended up in the Ezochi Army. None of the Japanese officers ended up serving Britannia, but several individual Japanese have enlisted in the Britannian-controlled Army of Satsuma and Choshu.
Shin Hyuga Shaingu is the last of the Hyuga family who has been adopted into a Britannian noble family. His foster mother Maria Shaingu owned an estate outside Niigata, where she employs landless Japanese peasants to work on her land. The Shaingu family is one of the few Britannian noble families that genuinely cared for the welfare of the Japanese population under Britannian rule. He currently serves within the Knights of St. Michael in Old Britannia.
Suzaku Kururugi on the other hand, is a prospective candidate for knighthood and an aspiring soldier within the Britannian Army. As the son of Earl Genbu, he had a lot of responsibility on his shoulders. His friendship with Euphemia has become a source of gossip within Britannian social circles, but at one point he had a fight with his tormentor, Naoto. As a result of the fight, he vowed to become the model citizen of Britannian Japan even further, having originally served in the Army of Satsuma and Choshu before being selected for further training with the regular Britannian military.
Akito Hyuga on the other hand, has lived an unusual life after his family was murdered under mysterious circumstances. Being the product of the Russian Cantonist system, Akito has been drafted into the Ezochi Army, which is technically a part of the Russian Army. His adoption by a Cossack ataman had allowed him to join the Ezochi Cossack Brigade (a Cossack unit comprising entirely of Koreans, Manchus, other Tungusic peoples like the Ainu and Japanese), which opens up an opportunity for him to become a valuable member of Ezochi's society.
Lelia von Breisgau and her family are Russian aristocrats who were descended from a German nobleman who left the Roman Catholic Church in the 1700s and settled in Russia. Two branches of the Breisgau family have emerged from this common ancestor: the House of Breisgau-Berlitz, which kept their Prusso-German roots, and the House of Breisgau-Bryzgalov, which became Russified. Her father was among the politicians who supported the Ezochi Cossack Brigade and even met Akito when he was a Starshiy Vakhmistr.
Ryo Sayama, Ayano Kosaka and Yukiya Naruse have lived well within Ezochi, but their induction into the Ezochi Army as members of a penal battalion after being caught stealing money from a vendor had landed them in trouble with the authorities. Their encounter with Akito was rough at first, but eventually became warm. He now leads his own squad of Shtrafniki troops, which the three penal battalion soldiers are under his command.
Gene Smilas is one of the few ECA military officers who detested the domination of Europe by the Roman Catholic Church, and has managed to defect to Russia where his skills as a tactician and strategist became useful. Moreover, because of his Greek Orthodox background, this info would have made him a prime target in the eyes of the Catholic Inquisition. He now intends to build his own Knight order, consisting of Cossacks and regular army personnel.

If we're following the OTL British pattern with their policy towards the natives, it might be just as bad as OTL.

That was my mistake, although with that in mind, I was going to split Kyushu into the Chinese portions and Britannian portions.
