Description
Background:
Felonius Gru is a former supervillain, widely regarded as one of the best in the world. Having carried out several evil schemes, he has been known for his use of advanced weaponry and tools, including his signature freeze ray. After he adopted three girls from an orphanage in hopes to use them as pawns for one of his schemes, he has since retired from villainy, and spends time raising his daughters. Due to his reforming, he has since joined the Anti-Villain League, where he met his wife Lucy. In addition to his family life, Gru is also the leader of a large race of small humanoid creatures with yellow skin, simply referred to as the Minions.

After a recent visit to Universal Orlando, I decided it would be a good idea to make customs of many characters that are featured within Universal's parks, but have not appeared in LEGO form. A lot of characters like Doc Brown, Homer Simpson, SpongeBob SquarePants, Harry Potter, and the dinosaurs of Jurassic Park have been both featured at Universal's Parks and Resorts as well as in LEGO form. But there's a lot of franchises that haven't been featured as LEGO products. This can range from a variety of issues, but among the most notable franchises that this applies to include Despicable Me, Transformers, Men in Black, Popeye, and the characters of Dr. Seuss.

I went with Gru first because Despicable Me is arguably the biggest of Universal's own properties since Jurassic Park and Back to the Future. The most notable feature of him is his scarf. I used Jay's scarf from The LEGO Ninjago Movie CMF series, and repainted it to match the grey and black stripe design of Gru's scarf. I also had to paint part of the scarf on his torso, as both ends of his scarf are laid against his front side. He is accompanied by Stuart, one of his Minions. I used a baby minifigure for Stuart because the Minions are very small, even more so than Gru's daughters, which I plan on making at some point.
