It does not take long to appreciate the emptiness of space. Not even a day’s journey from even the most busting orbital outpost, the starry black of the cosmos becomes all-encompassing. It swallows the silhouettes and shapes of artificial ships and satellites, reducing them to glimmering dots among thousands of stars. At a distance, all things soon become indistinguishable to the naked eye. None of the human senses were made to orient themselves off world, after all.
To the sensors of the ship, however, space is anything but empty. A desert, maybe, a harsh and deprived environment, deadly to anyone unprepared, but still full of data and impressions. Magnetic fields and waves of radiation, fast moving particulates and the faintest traces of interstellar dust – all things unseen by the human eye can be detected and made visible in false colors. With the full array of available information on display, even seemingly empty interplanetary space soon becomes an infinitely complex tapestry of interacting forces and specs of matter.
