Ever since its founding, Starfleet has been an organization dedicated to the peaceful exploration of space. The promise of pushing the final frontier and unlocking the secrets of the universe has been the motivation for countless people to join and remains the most prominent message carried outward by its members.

Mandate
The mandate of the Science and Exploration Branch of Starfleet is to seek out new worlds, phenomena, and civilizations, understanding the wonders already encountered and creating a comprehensive library of all accumulated knowledge about the universe.

Reputation
While the mandate of this branch is fundamentally a peaceful one, it does have a reputation for being overly ambitious in the pursuit of its goals. Such is the case with deep space expeditions causing diplomatic incidents, and scientific experiments being pushed too far too quickly.

Being one of the most influential voices in Starfleet throughout much of its history has allowed the Science and Exploration branch to lead it to many of its greatest achievements, from the push past the Warp 5 barrier to the unlocking of countless phenomena in the Alpha, Beta, and even the Delta-Quadrant.
However, in this time, the branch has also found itself responsible for some notable disasters in Starfleet's history, including early provocations of the Klingon Empire and the destruction of the Genesis Planet.

Assets
The focus of the Science and Exploration Branch has always been a fleet of deep-space exploration vessels, pushing the frontier of known space further and further out. These are often equipped with cutting-edge technologies and prepared for all manner of encounters, be they peaceful negotiations, scientific surveys, or hostile action.
Beyond these most prestigious starships, the branch operates a vast fleet of survey- and cartography-vessels, as well as many specialized starships and stations dedicated to long-term projects within Federation Space.

Supporters & Relation
Of the founding members of the Federation, Humans and Vulcans are most common in Starfleet's Science and Exploration Branch. Human curiosity led Starfleet to the stars before even the founding and despite their initial skepticism towards the rapid exploration, the Vulcans were eventually persuaded by the chances of scientific advancement and knowledge that this branch offered.

This is also reflected in the long-standing cooperation this branch maintains with scientific institutions on Earth and Vulcan. Organizations and even individuals from all other Federation member worlds striving for science and exploration are also often closely tied to this branch.

History
While Science and Exploration have always been core-tenets of Starfleet, the influence of their dedicated branch has varied throughout history.

Starfleet's early deep space expeditions in the 2150s, beginning with the launch of the NX-01 Enterprise, saw the Science and Exploration branch in one of its strongest positions. Pushing past the boundaries of the Vulcan patronage, Starfleet made its first steps alone in interstellar space with a strong mission statement of peaceful exploration.

The branch was eventually pushed into the background with the onset of the Earth-Romulan War in 2156, which necessitated the rapid militarization of all of Starfleet's assets, including the NX-01 and Columbia Class. Early tendencies in this direction had already been felt during the Xindi crisis and were now cemented for the coming years.

Following the Founding of the UFP in 2161, Starfleet aided largely in the building infrastructure and relations, taking up much of its resources for the latter half of the century.
Starfleet lived through a resurgence of its scientific focus in the 2210s before it was brought to a brutal end by the Four-Years-War in the 2250s. It was only after that conflict, that Starfleet could focus on Science and Exploration in earnest again. Over the next decades, between the 2260s and 2290s, internal tensions between the Science & Exploration Branch and the Strategy & Defense Branch of Starfleet would continuously grow.

The twenty-fourth century brought about the golden era of both the Federation and Starfleet's Science and Exploration efforts. This culminated in the construction of the Galaxy-Class starships and the USS Enterprise-D, a vessel dedicated to science and diplomacy first and foremost, becoming the flagship.

This golden age would falter, eventually, with the onset of the Borg threat and the sudden crises leading up to the Dominion War. While Starfleet was determined not to let its ideals be compromised as they had been sometimes before, a shift in the fleet was inevitable.

The outcome of these tumultuous times has left Starfleet in an uncertain state. While the immediate dangers seem to be gone and have allowed for the chance of a new golden era, the balance of power and stability of the Alpha and Beta Quadrant remains fragile.
