Description
The Ulaan is a starship class developed by Starfleet during the early 2370s to take on the role of a destroyer after it had been left vacant for the better part of a century. Compact and resilient, the class has made a name of itself for its high survivability rate in extreme environments and combat situations.

General Information
The Ulaan is comprised of a primary hull and two warp nacelles in a dorsal/ventral configuration, reminiscent of the old Saladin- and Akula-Classes. While this configuration makes the vessel less flexible in warp navigation, paired with powerful impulse engines it allows for remarkable maneuverability at sub-light speeds.

For its size, the Ulaan class deploys an exceptionally powerful sensor array, both to update navigational star-charts of its assigned patrol sector, as well as to detect potential incursions and identify unknown vessels accurately at a distance.

The primary saucer section of the Ulaan extends into two advanced drone-bays allowing for the rapid deployment of probes, utility- and combat units. To control this miniature fleet, the Ulaan is equipped with an additional computer core and separate encrypted transmitters, allowing for the swarm to be controlled directly.

Mission Profile
The Ulaan-Class is commonly assigned to crisis regions and border territories of Federation space to provide additional security and protection. During the Dominion War, these were primarily military assignments conducted by Starfleet's Strategy & Defense branch. Since the conflict, however, the Ulaan has seen increasing assignments in irregular nebulae and regions of dangerous cosmic phenomena, where its high maneuverability and resilience aid in navigating and charting remote areas.

In larger fleets and task forces, the Ulaan would take on the role of an escort for larger vessels, covering their flanks and forming vanguard groups to detect and disrupt hostile movements. Unfortunately, few vessels of the class were ready for action at the height of the Dominion War, relegating them to a secondary role in that conflict.

Class History
Both in design and function, the Ulaan class was heavily influenced by much older Starfleet designs such as the Saladin and Akula classes serving over a century before its introduction. This is in large part because for decades in-between, the particular role of escorts and destroyers was not prioritized by Starfleet, as its doctrine shifted to larger, less specialized vessels. This, paired with a shift away from military designs, caused the role to be left vacant for long.
This neglect would come to cost Starfleet during the early Dominion War, when older, small designs such as the Miranda were pulled out of retirement en-masse to fill in the role of escort vessels, a task they were barely equipped to achieve, resulting in high casualty rates.

When Starfleet began drawing up plans for a reform of the fleet in the wake of the Battle of Wolf 359, a return to light and specialized types such as the destroyer was made a high priority, resulting in several new designs including the Sabre, Ulaan and most famously, the Defiant.
