While the TIE Saboteur was originally deployed only in small numbers by imperial forces due to its specialized role, high cost, and limited application, the design found popularity among some of the later warlords.
Especially nefarious were experiments of a local governor by the name of Zhonab Bayan, who specialized in biological warfare. TIE Saboteurs were deployed in his commando squadrons to deliver sabotage droids equipped with neuro-toxin canisters. Via surgical incisions on vulnerable hulls, these droids would deliver their payload directly into the ship's systems, effectively poisoning life support systems. Even aboard major capital vessels, the incision of a single toxin canister could incapacitate significant portions of the crew and render the vessel inoperable within minutes.

The effectiveness of the biochemical weapon was mainly due to its rarity, exploiting the lack of specific counter-measures aboard most warships Bayan's forces were facing. The use of Bayan's 'Toxin TIEs' became a prominent example of the travesties occurring during the fracture of the former Galactic Empire, as more drastic measures were taken by increasingly delusional imperial leaders seeking to hold on to power.
