I like how its anatomy harks back to primitive mammals, though I'm guessing thats just a coincidence and not a deliberate nerd thing? Nice lighting too. I wasnt really interested in this when I saw the thumbnail on facebook, I must say, but close up it has way more detail than the thumb suggests.
Is 640*900 100% resolution?

shucks, cos i was just going for composition really
yeah thats 100% res - I dont really ever work over that for a speedpaint!

The composition is too subtle for a facebook resolution thumbnail really, the big mass of light kind of flattened the background depth, but facebook isnt exactly known for its awesome image quality.
How do you get that degree of line/shape sharpness at that resolution? Especially on the fire, thats pretty sweet. Whenever I work below 1000*1000 everything turns to pixel pushing and its hard to stay accurate, especially working at speed.

dunno really :I I just use like ... a little 1/2 pixel wide brush and get all scribbly. I think it depends on your resolution vs screen size too ... i find that when i work on my 32" tv at home, 900 pixels is definately enough! When i work on my little laptop tho, i do tend to bump it up to 1800 or so.
I keep it this small on lunchtime speeds, otherwise i get too noodley :/

Haha! Yeah, uhm..my screen is 19" 1280*1024, working on a 32 inch TV would make quite a difference D:. Having a widescreen would be nice too, bloody photoshop menus everywhere .
Down to practise and messing about then over anything else, hmm, I shall have to experiment.
