Description
Hey guys,
MORE BORDERLANDS! The Hyperion cooperation issued this new gun. It's a top of the line SMG complete with gun chest.
Step by step:
THE GUN:
This is one of the most popular SMG's on the market at the time off upload. The gun is mostly polymer, but the internals and outer barrel are metal. I got this gun from the main retailer in the Benelux. But since its release it's probably available in every airsoft store. Here are some store's in the Benelux that I found to have good pricing and service.

SANDING:
The whole gun needs to be sanded, especially the hard to reach parts. The gun is mostly made out of polymer, a kind of reinforced plastic. Paint sticks really well to these surfaces and won't be a problem. The front of the gun is made from metal though, and I have yet to find a good way of having paint stick to shiny flat metal. So I've used the same sanding as on the other parts in hope of the best.
PAINT:
The first 2 layers were a high grade white primer. I don't mind having the paint chip off on the gun, since it will make it look more Borderlandsy. But having the paint fall off completely would be a fail. So instead of the normal spray paint, I used the more expensive one.
After masking of the parts I wanted to be left white, the third fourth and fifth layers are painted in yellow of the same quality of paint.
The last 3 layers are of a UV resistant clear mat spray-paint. This is to protect the underlying layers from dirt, scratches and sun damage as much as possible.
A final touch is the outlining in permanent marker. I always find myself thinking the Borderlands object, gun prop will look nicer without it. But then I add the outlines and it makes the thing look perfect.
every time I'm astonished by that.
THE BOX:
I bought this box in a garage sale, and had immediately decided it would become a gun case. Though for which or what gun? no Idea. But that's how stuff usually gets into my possession and how I find uses for
objects that are long forgotten. SO, when you see something you like or have an idea for; buy it, get it, pick it up, get it out of the dumpster, borrow it from your school for an obscure long time, and keep it! You'll never know what it might become or what uses you have for it later.
THE BOX INTERIOR:
The interior is largely XPS foam covered in red patterned velvet. The cutouts where first planned and laid-out, then cutout. The way to do that is to put your desired shapes (the gun, magazine and box) on the foam and trace the outline. Then just cut away until it fits. Try imagining the depth while looking and fitting the object every so often. After the cutouts where finished I tested a bit of spray-glue on a spare piece of XPS to test if the solvents in the glue would dissolve the foam. Luckily it did not. Spray-gluing both sides and then carefully settling it in place, pressing the objects into the cutouts works really well when trying to get into all the annoying corners all at once.
Where you can do it better / what to look out for:
I used a stretchy fabric on the box interior which made gluing it into the cutouts a whole lot easier. If you don't use a stretchy fabric you will have to sew in a whole shebang of extra fabric to fit the shapes.
When painting working weapons like this one, make sure you mask every gap into any mechanism. Also, the mag and the receiver on the weapon were so well fitted that the 2/5 of a millimeter of paint was to much. The magazine wouldn't fit in the weapon any longer. I sanded the inside of the receiver to solve this problem. But make sure that you try the fit in any similar situation. It will save some nervous sanding.
Again when you see something you like or have an idea for; buy it, get it, pick it up, get it out of the dumpster, borrow it from your school for an obscure long time, and keep it! You'll never know what it might become or what uses you have for it later.
I hope you like my build, and that you've maybe learned something.
As always, do enjoy.
