Description Grootslang — Also known as Grote Slang, it is a legendary creature from South Africa, said to dwell within a deep cave. It’s described as a gigantic snake with the face (or other features) of an elephant. Its name means “great snake” in Afrikaans.

Mokele Mbembe — Another cryptid of African origin, specifically the Congo river. It’s arguably one of the best known among the African monsters, probably cos it just looks like a generic sauropod. Its name means “one who stops the flow of rivers”, which is pretty fitting and badass if you ask me.

Kappa — It’s more likely that you’ve seen or heard of this thing before than otherwise. A water spirit from Japan, it’s infamous for resembling a mix between a turtle and a human child, hence the name which is literally “river child” (河童). In addition, on top of its head is a water-containing disc, which if spilled, the Kappa would lose its power. Aside from drowning people and sumo wrestling, they would even snatch these things called Shirikodama (尻子玉) from your literal butthole. I swear, that is for real.

Taotie — One of the Four evil beings from Chinese mythology, representing greed and gluttony. It has become better known than the other three, thanks to a movie called ‘The Great Wall’. Contrary to how they look there, you can see that I also added curved horns above the shoulder eyes. That’s because of the ancient Chinese motifs, that depict Taotie with eyes, a gaping maw, and of course, a pair of horns.

Mongolian Death Worm — This one is kinda self-explanatory, but there sure is more to this wriggling nightmare. Known by locals as Olgoi-Khorkhoi (literally “large intestine-worm”), it’s said to be so poisonous, you can immediately perish just by touching it. If that ain’t enough, it can kill its prey via spraying venom or even electric discharge. Some say an IRL creature is the reasoning behind the legend, that being the Tartar sand boa (Eryx tataricus).

Griffin — Last but certainly not least, the very best known on this list. If the lion rules the land and the eagle rules the skies, then a combination of the two would be the ultimate king of the beasts. That’s exactly what people thought back in the time, and I say they got some points. Anyway, much like with dragons, it’s likely one of the real things that gave rise to such a legendary beast, was remains of prehistoric animals, in this case it would be the skull of a Protoceratops, or just the Protoceratops in general.
