Yeah, it's a shame he's not. There's potential here for something more than a paper-thin boyfriend or an alpha male, without making the show a teenage-dating love fest.

I imagine them being good friends, having double dates with the princesses from time to time. Flash Sentry had to do his best in order to win Shining's respect and approval to date his little sister.

Indeed, I imagine Shining saying Flash:

"If you make her cry or broke her heart, I'll make you pay for that!"

I personally am a bit disappointed Flash won't be in S4 because I can totally see him being there time to time, just as a flirty (and nothing more) relationship with Twi. If they played him as one of Shining's more trusted captains (which I can totally see too), Flash would be a good surrogate for Shining with Shining off in the Crystal Empire with Cadance. The show would just have to be careful to have Flash there far too much and replace the Mane 6 as the alpha characters on the show - a few appearances, a brief blush by Twilight when he arrives, and nothing more - that would have been perfectly fine.
