Edit: To anyone who has never played Mass Effect, this probably makes very little sense. So watch this [link]Coloring takes a lot longer than I expected... and I'm actually not all that happy with it. I'm not sure if I will continue to color these silly little comics in the future.
Every time I get to the this scene in Mass Effect 2, I just wish I could skip it. I don't like being yelled at. It seems yelling back or punching him isn't an option.
Mass Effect is awesome. I own nothing.
Props to troodon80 for reference models. His pictures made it a LOT easier to get the armors looking right. To be fair, I did take some artistic licence with the armors, and by that, I mean I simplified them mostly because I'm a bit lazy.
Also, Jack is wearing a shirt. Her nipple-tape necklace thing she has in game is stupid. I'm sorry, it just is.
Drawn in my sketchybook. Re-drawn with my Bamboo tablet in Manga Studio. Colored and edited in Photoshop.
Edit: In case anyone cares, I sketch ideas very simply at first, often going through several draft versions before I finally scan one sketch that becomes the basis for the final, inked version. This is how ideas evolve.

Ha! Thanks! I always have trouble with Horizon because I know what's coming.
I made this a long while ago, before I really knew what I was doing. I'm glad you like it, but I think I would like to re-make this better now that I've had a little experience drawing these characters and making comics.
Thanks!

...Well now..this is kinda going to happen to my Shepard in my fanfiction but its more of her crawling across the entire clearing trying to find a place to hide...(I don not hate Kaidan in fact he has always turned into a really close friend for all of my Shepards in the games) In the first part of the saga Kaidan had kinda traumatized just before Ilos...(Please don't hate me Kaidan fans...)

To put it simply he already knew about her previous traumatic experiences but chose to ignore them in favor of trying to romance her...and he ended up going through the captain's cabin door...and i mean through it not through the opening...and then Shepard spent the rest of the trip hiding under her bed...and yes that's the short version...

Mai Joy Shepard had a few mentally scaring events when she was 13 then 14...(PS Shepard is only 20 in the story) And so she has had trouble getting emotionally involved with anyone and accidentally gives off mixed signals a lot...

I was honestly hoping that Kaidan would come along and help Sheps with the collectors but NOOOOO! He has to give poor old Shepard a hard time about working with Cerberus. GOD He drove me nuts in the beginning of Mass Effect 3. I romanced Garrus for my Femsheps whom I named Felicity. Do you have any idea how hard it is to break up with Kaidan and those big beautiful brown eyes?! xD

Maskydoo In reply to Wolvengra [2013-05-14 22:39:04 +0000 UTC]
I always wondered what he did for the entire rest of Mass Effect 2. Did he just sit on his hands or stand around making spit bubbles?
And yeah, I left him for Garrus, too.

It's not easy leaving Kaidan for Garrus, hell last night I spent a good 5 to 10 minutes listing the pros and cons. So... Like a bandaid I just ripped it off and saved it so I couldn't change my mind. As for what Kaidan did the rest of Mass Effect 2? I have no clue probably rode around on his high horse with that stick up his ass.

I'm planning out 4 right now. One for Liara, Jack, Thane and Miranda, I am not a big fan of Jacob Taylor. Honestly he kind of annoys me. I would like to reuse my male Shep from ME1/ME2 for Miranda and Jack just because Jack is a cold bitch that lets the walls come down, you get to see a character evolution in her that is awesome. ^^

Maskydoo In reply to Wolvengra [2013-05-14 23:47:54 +0000 UTC]
Jacob is... a mostly decent guy. And that's about all anyone can really say about him. He's not particularly interesting. Plus, if you've planed ME3, you know that isn't a romance that can really go anywhere.

LOL me too. I wanted a renegade option to punch him in the face and say "Shut up and listen you jerk!"
I always imagined that if Shepard could have gotten the VS to listen, they might have had a real shot at getting the Alliance more involved, that way Shepard wouldn't have had to remain affiliated with Cerberus. Or, Shepard could have at least given the VS the bug-repellent Mordin made so the Alliance could possibly use it to protect other colonies.

ErsbethShadowsong In reply to Maskydoo [2013-05-08 12:51:26 +0000 UTC]
I missed so much the renegade interruption at Horizon. A few weeks after playing the game, some friends and I commented this scene and one of them was in awe that you didn't get different answers or reactions if you had romanced the VS... I've also discussed this briefly with a few Kaidan fans and we conluded that the scene was quite bad written.
Those are very valid points. In fact, you could get a Renagede choice if you stuck with Cerberus -more resources? More money to invest in upgrades?- or a Parangon choice if you returned to the Alliance. You could even have different team mates! The possibilities... I like a lot your idea of giving Kaidan the bug repelent. You should use it in one of your stories. Definitely. It's a very good idea.

Maskydoo In reply to ErsbethShadowsong [2013-05-08 15:41:18 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, it was disappointing that the dialogue wasn't much different if there had been a romance or not, especially since, if romanced, this looks a lot like a "we're over," thing. Weird, since Kaidan later accuses Shepard of "cheating," if she moved on afterwards.
There were definitely possibilities here. Before the third game came out, I had sort of expected that Shepard really would choose between Cerberus and the Alliance, having played one game with each by that point (and honestly, Cerberus was a lot more helpful than the Alliance was.) I guess it couldn't really be done though as that would require BioWare to pretty much make two completely separate Mass Effect 3's.

ErsbethShadowsong In reply to Maskydoo [2013-05-08 18:04:12 +0000 UTC]
Oh! I've had long discussions about what's cheating and what's not cheating with many people regarding the VS. For me, that scene clearly stated that, if by any chance Shepard and Kaidan's relationship was still alive, after two years of mourning the commander, said relationship was over. so I don't really know why he must be upset if Shepard pursued another LI. I understand that the e-mail he sends can be considered as an apology, but... Ok, in Kaidan's defense, I'll say that when he released the "voice" e-mail, it was far more emotional than the written version. Because I have to say that he has a nice husky voice...
Another good point. It could be also considered as Renegade/Parangon choices and it would have given at least some sense of choice. I'm not sure whether they would have many differences. They could have reduced the differences to who you contacted in the War Room: Hackett or TIM. The whole game could be the same (Cerberus could act as if they were part of the Alliance, just fight the Reapers, so the Normandy crew could wear the Alliance blues) and just at the end, Cerberus could betray all and discover themselves to have been gathering more information on the Crucible and the Reapers. Many Shepards could feel a little dumb or not, depending on their choices. And many fight could have been resolved like the gunship fight during the Archangel mission: if you kill the batarian who is fixing the thing, the fight is easier. Or if you hack the mech, it starts attacking the Eclipse mercs, until they destroy it. So many possibilities... And I don't think they'll be much different and difficult to implement (from a non-developer POV)

Ah well, there's always what could have been. I'm remembering an earlier BioWare game, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (not to be confused with Bioware's Star Wars: The Old Republic, a completely different game.) In the end, the player gets to choose whether to walk the path of Jedi or Sith, whether to save the Republic or destroy it. Choosing the dark side ending results in the player being forced to kill the party members who remain on the light side. It's a very compelling close to the game and shows earlier game events in a totally different context. Something similar, maybe, could have been done here. It would have been interesting. Ah, what could have been.

I also wish punching or something was an option. It's not that I don't like Kaidan, I do. It's that my FShep while mostly paragon, has a short fuse sometimes, and that's probably how she'd react.

Ah Horizon. The pain of that scene never gets old ... I like the idea of the scene, the drama and the hurt because I think it gives their relationship (if romanced) more depth. Still, I wished BioWare had handled it better, given us at least the chance to explain (or re-connect later/answer to his letter) and not part with him in such a muddy awful way.
I can absolutely understand his reaction (having to deal with the death of a loved one only to have them back after two years claiming to be back grom the dead and working for terrorists, I mean wtf?!) but I wished there'd been a possibility to at least react somehow. Horizon was pretty poorly written, maybe as an excuse to get rid of the VS as an important part of the game in the long run :/
Meh, now I'm sad again. Anyway, sorry for rambling and nice comic! I like that you dressed up Jack!

Maskydoo In reply to FreakingMuse [2013-03-24 20:00:18 +0000 UTC]
I agree. The events couldn't have been easy for Kaidan. As an outside viewer, I understand this. The way I imagine my Shepard, however, is a bit less easily forgiving.
Form a narrative standpoint, I actually like this scene. In fact, I think it could have stood to be a bit more intense. Putting myself in Shep's shoes, it's a heart-breaking scene enough as is. I actually feel real anxiety when I play that part of the game.
I agree, some means of response would have been nice.
In truth, it's Kaidan's words on Mars that piss me off. By then, he doesn't have the excuse of shock anymore, and I would assume he'd gained some knowledge of the events of ME2. And he evidently didn't visit or write in the 6 months in between. My Shep wouldn't easily forgive that (although Skenko is still my OTP.) I think the matter needs a lot more drama in ME3. I'm actually planning a more serious comic series for that, but that will have to wait a while.
π: 0 β©: 1
FreakingMuse In reply to Maskydoo [2013-03-24 21:02:09 +0000 UTC]
Is your Shepard renegade or paragon? Mine is kinda a
mixture but more on the paragon site and she understood.
But that's the beauty of Shepards, they are all different
But yeah, you are right. More intense and also longer.
It just was over so very quickly. If they decided to leave
out the VS for the rest of the game, they could at least
have made that scene a bit longer and more intense.
Hm, I am not sure if I agree with you on the Mars
situation. I mean, life moved on for him during the
time Shepard worked with Cerberus and we get to know
that there was a lot going on. Becoming a major and
his biotic spec ops unit must've kept him busy and certainly
away from Shepard and Vancouver. And as far as we
know nobody could've reached her, not even people
in the Alliance (Joker) so I'm not sure how Kaidan should've.
Do you have the ME3 datapad? He actually sends
her a message, something along the lines of them letting
him see her hopefully. Which means he seemed to have tried.
But in terms of Mars, I can understand him being wary
and I like that he makes mistakes but acknowledges them
later and apologizes.
Have you played the Citadel DLC? If not, I don't want
to spoil you but it actually proves Kaidan right in terms
of being vary about what Cerberus did or might've done to
Shepard. Same with Dr. Eva. BioWare shows that they could
easily have the real Shepard replaced through an AI or something
else and it's not wrong of Kaidan to be wary, even if his
missing trust still hurts on Mars.
On the one hand I'm glad that they all acted mature
and concentrated on the war, on the other I would've liked
to have seen them going into detail in regards of Horizon,
if only so people would stop screaming bloody murder
about it and maybe try to understand that it wasn't easy for
any of them. But that would've meant giving the VS more time
and that's not something BioWare liked to do, unfortunately.
Your comic idea sounds interesting anyway and I wish you
good luck with it!
