Are you serious! You don't get layers! How can you not get layers? Simply there just diffrent platforms which don't get effect by each with changes done to the pic. For example I have my line work as Layer 1 then i'll have my flat colours as Layer 2 (sometimes for big pics theres a flat colour layer for every diffrent colour) then shadows for Layer 3 and then highlights for Layer 4, and the background layer of course. Looks kinda like this.
Layer 1 (linework)
Layer 4 (highlights)
Layer 3 (shadows)
Layer 2 (flat colours)
Background (usally white plain colour)
What it means is that the linework will overlap the colours and shadows etc, meaning that they look clean and not so crappy looking, and the shadows and highlights are above the flat colours to give them texture etc. and thats pretty much it, for another example to ad on to this one, just say I wanted to change the colour of the guys skin or something I would click on Layer 2 and change it to whatever I wanted, without anything happening to the rest of the picture(only affecting the skin). I hope this helps a little, im not very good at explaing stuff. Which reminds me, what happened to this workgroup thingy? Like hardly anyone comments on my art (not that im submitting many) and I do like constructive comments that may help me with my work. Anyways! Have a good day!

lol, I try to comment as much as I feel is needed, lol. but yeah I understood that much, it's what I normally do, except trying to give it a bckground won't work for me, I can't figuire out why oh! I think I get it, but how do you open a line art file and get that to be layer 1, with the background whatever?

What I usally do is open the image file, then copy the main background layer(Drag the layer onto the Create New Layer switch thingy at the bottom) Which would make a new file Named Background Layer Copy then I select the orignal background layer Click on Edit then Fill (choose white) That way the background is on its own and you still have the linework, I then click Background Layer Copy, open up the channels window (Click Window, then Channels) At the bottom of the Channels window is a circle to the left (Name: Load channel as selection) Which will then highlight all the white area cept for the black outlines, click Delete to get rid of all the white (making it transparent) unselect then you would notice that the lines are a bit gray now, to fix that just click the :Lock Transparent Pixels: Top left of the layers window, then go over the lines with pitch black paint tool (locking it will make the paint tool only effect the lines) Then you can colour and what not under background copy layer.
