Oh my god, you just ask me a very good question ...

I think it was Safari photo with Austin Stevens, yes, it was!
I don't know if you know this man, otherwise he is a man who takes lots of pictures and at the same time, informs us about the species that he takes in pictures. He travels the world seeking animals fascinating and frightening, and visit the regions of the world's most remote to take pictures.

That's him with a rhinoceros -> [link]

I love how the little bird seems to "pop" out in yellow against the stone grey Rhino and back ground.
The little "relation" they have in the real world is expressed greatly here.
Well deserved.

i see my pal ~eidolic commented here first, haha. we have similar tastes in great art.

this is seriously awesome... 11x14, no wonder it took you forever to complete. as a pencil wildlife artist i completely respect this and your skills. fabulous work. the bird is too funny!

there are so many comments so i apologize if i'm being redundant... what media did you use for this? pen/ink? I'm sort of thinking the color is used well to define the bird hanging out of the ear, but if this was done in ink, it might look good with a very light wash of color over it - nothing too dramatic - but just enough to make it a finished color piece instead of a black and white piece with a spot of color. maybe a thin, pale wash of green/brown tones so as not to distract from the yellow.

it's not a big deal, i think you could leave it like this and have the bird be your statement. or next time, the bird in the same black pointillism tones with a wash of color over it, to tie it all together.

either way, it's great work. nice job and congrats on the DD

I use a Sakura Pigma Micron pen in the smallest size they make; a 0.20 mm width. The bird is a watercolor wash with the ink added over it. This was an experiment with color for me, so I did not use too much for fear of really messing up after putting so much work into it. The next piece I did, Tang Dynasty, is a full wash of watercolor with the dots added on afterward. You can see my WIP of that one in my WIP gallery.

The next piece in this series will have more color in it, but it will also be more subtle.

Sakura Microns are my favorite pen, too. Must be tough for pointillism though, as the smallest tips bend easily. You could always try the Steadtler line of pigmented ink pens. they have a bit firmer tip. The new prismacolor fineliners have a strong tip, too, but i personally don't think the ink is as pigmented as the Sakura pens.

I did check out your gallery and took a long look at tang dynasty (haha..love the name). You used colors really well in that piece, it think it worked out good for you. As a pencil artist, I know the intimidation of moving from black and white to color, but I say just give it a shot and go for it, don't be afraid to experiment, just like you did with the bird and the rhino. Looks like the washes work good with your style

well, I wasn't really listening when my teacher talked about it, and all I wrote down in my sketchbook was Fauvism... so I figured that was what it was called... and plus the class that taught me about fauvism and pointillism was taken... 7 years ago? idk a long time ago!

We all have patience for the things that we want or like to do, where as people who do not like the same things as much do not waste their time doing them.

I've never tried it, myself, but I should. Any special technique you used, or did you just draw little dots all over the place?
