BLACK STUDY PROJECTThe first official piece of the BSP. This is a characature of my longest running student Ashley. I taught her three years straight with limited success. She's a constant reminder to me of how important discipline and motivation are in a student.
Yes, I know the background is bullshit. I just put it there for the sake of context. THere seems to be some conjecture as to wether or not this image looks better with or without color...

The answer I SHOULD have given at the time:
She has a big bottom lip because the girl who this was based on had a big bottom lip.
You all don't have that, I know, but she did.
Also I am tending to like drawing the big lips, they're fun.

Well then why not ask me "why that shape nose?" "why that shade of skin" "why that hair style" We don't all have it.
It's not the point. This is what SHE as in a REAL person I knew, LOOKED like.

To tell you the truth she is so dark I couldn't see her nose! I know better than you would what the characteristics of a black person are. I asked why because you said that you wanted to find out signals to show that a character is African other than skin tone. So I asked if you don't like it... TOO BAD! Oh I'm sure whomever this picture is supposed to look like doesn't have eyes THAT big so....

Oh you know better than me huh? Like hell you do! I just told you this is a charicature of a REAL person who I knew PERSONALLY! Of course her eyes aren't THAT big, it's called a char-ic-a-ture.
Yes, I'm looking for similarities and extremes. Comonalities and discrepencies. Anything I can see repeated as many times as possible. That does NOT mean I'm looking to make one diaphoric amalgamation. I'm not trying to make a say all, end all, be all, symbol of black people everywhere. That would be impossible and insane at the same time!
I didn't say african, I said black, of which there are MANY things that run the gamut. If I wanted to get African specific I'd just go over to my Nigerian classmate and have his family sit for a photo for me again. I want MORE than that.

Technically I'm little better than a tutor these days, but I'm in classes to get certified here in the next 2 years. Then I get to teach K-12 Art

hm.. I think a big part of drawin' black people has got to be the lips.I remember drawin' a pic some time ago of one of my white friends, however, the way I'd drawn the eyes and lips made her appear black
