Oh I know that title's been used already, ho hum.

The character of Agent 8 is, shall we say, a bit interesting. With the other Agents, especially 4 and Neo 3, it's basically canon that they're blank slates for the player to project their OCs onto, and not characters in and of their own right. Hasn't stopped people from making them characters, of course, and Agent 3 kind of escaped that with both Octo Expansion and especially Splatoon 3, becoming the Captain and gaining a definite character trait of being really shy, but their appearance and basic looks are still up to the player. But Agent 8 (or just Eight now) is different. Even in Splatoon 2 they were the only playable character to have dialogue in the form of the Mem Cake poetry.

But Side Order more or less establishes Eight as their own character; they are not shared with the playable Octoling race in Splatoon 3 as characters explicitly refer to Eight as their own person when brought up - Acht's dialogue in Tableturf is one example. They arguably have a genuine name instead of just a callsign, are closely related to the main characters of the DLC instead of just being along for the ride like Neo 3, their appearance is much more set in stone (still uses the S2 default hairstyle despite the myriad of new choices in 3) and so on and so forth. So Eight is in this weird state where they ARE and ARE NOT their own character.

What I'm trying to say with all of this is that it now feels kinda weird to see any Agent 8 OCs in the place of Eight during Side Order. Like if it isn't the promotional skin tone and tentacle style it feels off. And, admittedly, is a little funny if your 8 OC goes against that. So when I got the DLC alongside my good friend Shayne, we agreed I'd "play" as our shared Agent 8 OC Ve in the DLC and he'd take the boi octoling. And I just found it amusing, picturing Ve running around in this chaotic(ly bullshit) spire while Marja is still at home and missing her not-wife. So it'd be a shock when she gets home from the ordeal and she's still wearing the bodysuit...

Come to think of it, isn't it kinda weird that the Agent 8 clothing for both DLCs is far skimpier than any of the Hero Mode outfits? Tight leather miniskirt in OE and this limbless bodysuit here. It's like someone on the development team has a...thing, for this. In the same way another fucker on the team has a thing for pricing the Salmon Run Scale Shop items like this £45 game was free to play.
