Description For a large amount of the previous year (and a small part of this one) I've been talking about something I was calling "Sonic Reboot". It was supposed to be a light-hearted jab at both Sonic's supposed 2014 reboot and the actually-happned-to-many-fan's-displeasure 2013 Devil May Cry reboot. But that's all it was; light-hearted. A joke. Nothing more than something to pass the time. It was never supposed to be serious or be close to the Sonic already established. This one, on the other hand...

See, I got into a conversation with a man on this site who was voicing his annoyance at the latest Sonic games, particularly their writing. Which is fair enough, Sonic games these days barely pass above fanfiction. Especially the comics and IT'S reboot, Jesus Christ.

So I asked him how he would write Sonic, given the chance. He said that he'd write Sonic as he was like back in Adventure; being cocky yet fair instead of being a quisi-hipster douche that endlessly taunts empty space. Again, fair enough. I then thought about how I'D write him. And I thought to myself that the established Sonic canon isn't really going anywhere, not if status quo continues to rule the writing overall. So I thought...what would happen to Sonic if the status quo DIDN'T rule? If, say, the events of Lost World didn't reverse themselves to avoid killing off the only two characters that Sonic Team seem to like anymore. Amy and Knuckles really DID die. Permanently. What effect would that have on Sonic?

Would he sink into a deep depression? Would he retire out of grief until The Call found him once more? Would he commit suicide? Well, no, he'd just spring back to being an overly cocky twat, 'cause who needs personality or good writing when you have BLAST PROCESSING, amirite folks?

..NO. NO YOU'RE WRONG. YOU'RE DEAD WRONG. Gameplay means nothing if your main character is so flat and obnoxious that you can't force yourself through it because you loathe everything he says. You need to make the protagonist interesting and sympathetic. You don't always need to make him overly happy-chappy and light-spirited to do that. Making him an anti-hero with a decent reason to be anti-heroic works just as well. And with that in mind, here's Reboot Actual Sonic the Hedgehog.

FULL NAME: Unknown, responds only to "Sonic"
AGE: 18
SPECIES: Hedgehog
BIO: Sonic the Hedgehog was a bright, gifted and well respected individual. He was routinely locked in battle with dangerous beings known as Zetis, particularly the murderous group known as "The Deadly Six"Note1. They had claimed to know Sonic and revelled in his potential failure, something Sonic had no idea about.Note2 They said that they had tried to drain his world of energy and kill all of his friends, but he had stopped them and reversed the drainage, saving his friends. Knowing that even the great Sonic the Hedgehog could only keep up so much, they purposely cracked numerous idiotic schemes to both give him a giant following for larger impact and whittle him down with fatigue. This worked like a charm and by the time he had made it to their latest scheme, he was weak enough to be merely swatted aside by the Zetis' new machine, a large robot powered by the energy drained from his closest friendsNote3. He could only watch, events screened worldwide, as his friends succumbed to their drained state and died slowly in front of him. Overwrought with grief, he retired from the adventuring business and dropped into obscurity. The Zetis didn't last long, however, as they too were slaughtered by a bigger threat, an organisation known as The EmpireNote4.

Fast forward 3 years and Sonic is a wreck. While still in fairly decent health without a single taken drug, he was still haunted by the deaths of his friends and he found it impossible to move on, instead attempting to drown it with alcohol. By this point, he had been forgotten due to propaganda from The Empire. Almost every day to him was sitting in his local bar drowning his sorrows. One day, however, a brown-furred hedgehog with a large red scarf approached him with an offer. The Empire had grown too strong and evil and needed to be stopped, with Sonic being the only one known who could stop them. Despite repeatedly asking for his identity and noting that he had "retired", the being insisted on his action until both got attacked by Empire spies trying to prevent this revolution. Learning that the Empire's leader was personally out for him, Sonic decided to finally leave retirement and go on this unusual adventure to save the Empire and anyone in the way.
POWERS:
-High speed
-Super Transformation
-Uses two double barrelled shotguns as backups
WEAKNESSES:
-Hydrophobic
-Physically weak
-Lack of self-defence capabilities
PERSONALITY: Sonic is a bitter, overly introverted person. He rarely emotes in any way other than anger or mild impressiveness, generally being glum and grumpy. He still has parts of his alternates, being somewhat cocky and snarky, but noticeably less so than his other counterparts.
NOTES:
1: Sonic has yet to meet Eggman in this universe, the Deadly Six come first.
2: They are the same Deadly Six from Lost World, universe-jumping to this one to continue their overly violent schemes.
3: Amy Rose, Knuckles the Echidna, Vanilla Rabbit and Marine the Raccoon.
4: The Eggman Empire, in other words

Good. I'm going to bed now. Enjoy!

I would imagine this version of Sonic being voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch, considering how experienced he is when voicing characters who have similar traits as Sonic, much better than...Roger Craig Smith, "I'd rather be hilariously edgey! Only at your local Pizza Hut! HOOBA DOOBA!" Ugh...

Yeah. That was a pretty bad casting choice...

thankfully Legend of Zelda hasn't lost it's story telling, which happens to be one of the elements that makes those games challenging (first play through any of them), the psychological warfare they incorporate into the story adds so much difficultyΒ

It helps that most of the Zelda games have a similar plot; Zelda is captured, go save her. Well, sometimes. It certainly variates more than Mario or Sonic ever did.

The beginning and ending of a legend of Zelda game is usually the same, heck the dungeon order is frequently similar but what happens in between is different for almost all the games. It also helps that they kill off link in almost every game at the end off screen, so he can be reborn in the next game in the timeline

Which has the side effect of making the timeline so convoluted and the character so storyless that it's hard to keep track.

I keep to the adults timeline, Skyward Sword (all), Zelda 1 (all), four swords (all), ocarina (all) , majora's mask (hero dies but is successful/adult timeline), twilight, four swords adventure and Zelda 2 (I think). There are two other timelines but I don't follow them. But all effect the following chronological titles. It also helps that Link has only had dialogue in Skyward Sword and you got to pick what he says.

At least the Sonic timeline is singular. It's even vauger what games take place at which parts, but it's a start. It appears to be Sonic 1, CD, 2, 4, 3/Knuckles, Adventure 1, Adventure 2, Shadow, Heroes, Secret Rings (established as canon in Generations), Black Knight, Unleashed, Colours, Generations and Lost World. Doesn't seem to matter where the Riders games go.

Only alternate timelines there are all the alternate media (exepct SATAM, as that ties into the comics) and Sonic 2006 (wiped itself from the main timeline).

As a whovian I don't mind numerous, and jumbled timelines, I don't see them as a bad thing, just an added layer of story, for all we know, the three timelines will converge at some point

Though Sonic characters using guns are fine.

I don't think Sonic himself needs them, he's clearly faster than one.Β

But at the distances he fights (close range), surely two barrels of buckshot will have more punch than kicking them. The Empire's robots are stronger than the older Egg Pawns and the like as they can survive being pushed over.

And what about your version of a rebooted Sonic? What does he use?

He still uses homing attacks and kicks, though his kicks are more martial arts-styled. He can also electrify his fists and legs when he uses a power ring.

Hopefully he's grounded himself or he'll turn his legs into drumsticks.
