Description An animated gif of Hiccup serving lemonade at a fundraiser to save dragons!

The short story follows:

SHORT STORY:
HICCUP AND THE FUNDRAISER

Narrator:  As Stoick the Vast, chief of Berk returns from inspecting a newly built mine in the hills, he is surprised to find a bustling crowd of his fellow vikings gathered around a huge, wooden cask in the center of town … drinking!

:"What is the meaning of this?  I wasn't aware that we were celebrating a feast!  And especially at a time when we should be focused on preparing for the throws of winter!  WHO STARTED THIS?!"

Narrator:  The cheerful and chatty crowd parted down the center, revealing a rather happy looking boy with a freckly face.

:"Hiccup!   I should've guessed."

(filling a viking's mug):"Oh hi, Dad!  Would you like to donate a bit of coin for a very worthy cause?"

:"Donate …. wha--?!"

:"Coin … you know …. gold, silver, copper ---"

:"I KNOW what COIN is, son!  What I don't know is what in Thor's name you are doing!"

(filling another mug):"Well you know, it occurred to me this morning that even though our tribe has made peace with the dragons, there are still many other tribes out there in the Archipelago that haven't."

:"And so …. you're …. serving up our stores of mead?  To celebrate this?"

(chuckling):"No, no, no, Dad.   First of all, we're not CELEBRATING …. ….. I'm raising money to take a team of viking representatives to the other islands to educate them about the value of being friends with dragons!"

:"YOU'RE WHAT?!"

(filling a mug):"You didn't notice the sign?!"

Narrator:  As Hiccup points overhead and continues serving drinks to eager vikings who have brought their mugs from home, Stoick suddenly sees the huge sign flapping in the breeze.  In bold letters, the sign reads, "Buy a drink!  Save a dragon!"

:"Hiccup …. you …"

:"… Came up with a great slogan for the campaign?   Yeah, I thought it was really clever, though Fishlegs helped me a little with the wording because he said that, 'Buy a lemonade' was too long *whispering to Stoick* especially since a lot of the villagers still can't read too well."

:"Lemonade?!?"

(filling a mug):"Yeah, you didn't think that I'd use up our winter supply of mead, did you?   (to another viking lady that handed Hiccup her mug) Oh, thank you very much, ma'am.  Your purchase may have just helped save a cute little baby nadder from a horrible death."

: (to the crowd) "Buy a drink! …. Save a dragon!"

:"Hiccup …. this idea of yours is …. another of your ideas ……. but, where did you find lemons to make all of this lemonade?  They don't grow anywhere around here."

(filling a mug):"Oh, it's very simple, Dad!  You salvaged crates of them from a shipwreck weeks ago."

:"I salvaged???  Wait … you mean …"

:"Yeah, they were just sittin' in a warehouse doing nobody any good, and so I thought, 'Hey, I can make lemonade from them and raise money to save dragons'!"

:"Son …. how many of the crates did you use?"

(filling a mug):"All of them."

:"ALLLLLLLLLLL of them?!"

:"Yeah.  *whispering to Stoick*  It takes a lot of lemons to make a lot of lemonade."

:"Hiccup …. those …. those ….THOSE LEMONS WERE A GIFT FOR THE BOG BURGLARS TO CELEBRATE OUR NOT-SO-STABLE FRIENDSHIP WITH THEIR TRIBE!"

(filling a mug):"Ah heck, Dad, just invite them over to our island for a few drinks of lemonade, and we can all celebrate together AND raise money for a good cause.  We've still got PLENTY of lemonade!"

Narrator: Raising a stern finger in prelude to the sure-to-follow tirade, Stoick the Vast opened his mouth wide, inhaled …… and then froze, rather statue-like.  "Perhaps," he thought, his mouth still open,"perhaps this idea of inviting the Bog Burglars to celebrate together is a good idea.  Better to have friends than enemies!"

And as Stoick closed his mouth and watched his son tirelessly collect coin and serve mugs of drink, the chief also marveled at how easily his son had taken to leadership:  from idea, to organizing the event, to working it.

(with a smile) :"Give me one of those mugs, my boy!"

(hesitating and whispering):  Dad …….. You have to donate some coin for it."

:"Oh .. yes … right!   Coin!  (searching on himself) Now where did I put those coins! ….. That's what happens when your clothing lacks proper pockets!"

(filling a mug):"Buy a drink!  Save a dragon!"

THE END

In this story, Hiccup is referencing the tribe where Camicazi and Big Bertha live from the books. I don't know if you're familiar with the books, but they're "friends."

This is well animated-- and I like the father-son exchange of your story. I still question Hiccup's method of serving lemonade-- that sure looks like mead to me-- well, maybe it's the world's first lemon mead.

Hmmm ..... lemon flavored mead ...... well perhaps the cask wasn't completely empty before I poured in the lemon juice. Let's keep that just between you and me, Auntie Fjord.

Oh I didn't animate it, Fjord; this is just screen caps from the TV series that I stitched together. And ANY time Hiccup and food serving is involved, I would greatly question it! (Though, of all the viking teens, I would trust his the most. )

alright then! I'll keep a pair of tight lips then!! I solemnly swear I WON'T give away spoilers

ooh! I know what you mean!! they were SO good! And I was SO sceptical/afraid of what it COULD be before I actually saw them. I KNOW the animation isn't 'movie' quality and that they sort of HAVE to resolve stuff 'fast' but 1. it's a 20 min. show and they CAN'T possibly put THAT much detail into it. They get off with a LEGIT excuse 2. there's ONLY so much storytelling you can do in 20 min. and they're STILL doing a good job for the time they have.

I'm just so impressed with the Dreamworks people because I've seen some HORRIBLY done computer animation from other TV shows ..... seems like one of them was a transformers spin off. TERRIBLE computer animation.

Dragon Riders of Berk is very close to movie quality, and you can tell that the animators spent a lot of time working on the facial expressions and gestures of the characters and nice little small touches like a fire roaring distantly in the background at Hiccup's house .... and it looked like real fire. The firelight and interior scenes have great lighting!!!

Dreamworks: YOU'RE AWESOME!

PepperJDarcy In reply to masterrohan [2012-10-29 03:33:06 +0000 UTC]

Dreamworks: YOU'RE AWESOME I second that! heartily. Did you know, that the director of a DISNEY movie called Bolt was FIRED by Disney, and the director went on to be hired by DW and directed none other than HTTYD? What's that say about DW as a company?!

And I noticed last night how different they treat HTTYD. My cousin was watching a Netflix 'thing' where they had all the holiday DW shorts (Sherk, Madagascar, and HTTYD-- and I've NEVER seen madagascar, so I can't 'speak' for the story exactly) But from watching the Shrek shorts AND the Madagascar shorts NEXT to Gift of the Nightfury-- it's SUCH a different plane of story telling. It's like DW puts their *WHOLE* heart, soul and feeling into that. They know Hiccup has to be handled 'just so' but 'Sherk' can be anything stupid/loose/ and dumb. It's like they flip a switch on every time they touch HTTYD and it's amazing. Yes, it sure is about 'money' but for being 'money' they are doing a GOOD job! AND DW has 'workers' who have written stories/illustrated stories for their kids-- and DW got a HOLD of this published story and is NOW making an animatied movie about it. They're VERY involved/care about their employees (which seems important to me for whatever reason or other )

oh gosh. I rambled sorry.

" But from watching the Shrek shorts AND the Madagascar shorts NEXT to Gift of the Nightfury-- it's SUCH a different plane of story telling. "

Enormously different! I really didn't like any of the Shrek movies (though I saw 3 of them with friends) and I haven't seen any of the Madagascar movies. That first HTTYD movie was like stepping into an entirely different world of magical wonder.

Disney's films have just been tanking like a block of cement in the ocean! And I HATE the direction that they've taken with their computer animation! Their human characters look so realistic that it's creepy, creepy, creepy (and they should know better because that awkward feeling for the audience has been dubbed the "Uncanny Valley" and is covered in the very first college class on making movies!

And then take a look at how Dreamworks handles the human characters in HTTYD in other films. Ironically, the use the same principles that Disney used in traditional animation years ago: body proportions, features and clothing are exaggerated so that we know that these characters are humans, but our brains also understand that these are animated characters and artwork <-- a much more pleasant experience than feeling freaked out by characters in A Christmas Carol or Mars Needs Moms, etc., etc.

PepperJDarcy In reply to masterrohan [2012-10-29 04:10:24 +0000 UTC]

yeeeeeah. Disney's not my *favourite* I LOVED Tangled. That was a *surprise*. Sweet. Innocent. Cute. They struck gold. Otherwise-- blah! Though I'm half interested in Wreck it Ralph because of who writes the credit song

OMGOSH! *DON'*T get me started on Mars Needs Moms and A Christmas Carol! It was SO real it was almost... dumb. The movement of the characters WASN'T rigged very well. Sometimes it was so real you couldn't tell, other times it was so 'off' it was distracting. We watched it w/people who loved the animation and my sister and I kept exchanging horrified glances. It didn't even make much sense. That and they kept pausing/rewinding/starting it over again

And THEN I borrowed Mars Needs Moms from the library and my sis and I were gonna watch it before I moved-- but we both stopped it 5 min. in. We felt *REALLY* cheated because they didn't have 'charactatures' and it looked 'real'. We couldn't stand the animation. oh gosh!

And another thing about DW is they're also 'developing' a style of animation-- as the way they animate the shape of eyes and general shape of the 'thin' necks/torso/hands/heads etc. ALL unique-- but it's a 'style' that rings true with 'DreamWorks' and they hit it after HTTYD. I know you said you didn't dig Rise of the Guardians but as far as animation goes, the style of Hiccup's eyes/animation is very similar to Jack Frost's animation/look. Which is good. If they develop that 'styel' that says DW, it'll be fantastic. Like Anmie is SO recognizable. Disney dabbles in so many areas. All the Disney princess 'eyes' and styles are SO different. They go back and forth and there's no set 'look/tone' for their work.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

masterrohan In reply to PepperJDarcy [2012-10-30 23:25:13 +0000 UTC]

One good thing about Mars Needs Moms is that it was such an epic flop that the digital animation company making it (owned by Disney) has been closed, so no more movies from them!

I hope Disney relearns the magic because they're movies have been on a slide since the Lion King! I thought tangled was good, but somehow still lacked a certain .... magic or extra layer of depth to it. I recently rewatched Beauty and the Beast (wow it's old), but I really liked it's cell animation style, music and story.
