Exelent tutorial!!!

Thank you

If your main object placed on 2/3 of canvas width - it's already divine proportion... But never minde - there are over8000 amazing pictures, which have very strange composition (not from painting schoolbook). Devine proportion - just one of 100 methods.

This covers quite a good deal of information but I'm just a little worried about how it suggests realistic beautiful art is only anime art with anime faces, anime proportions and anime visual style. You go as far as saying this drawing is wrong is this one is good. But the "wrong" colors for example could be used very efficiently in certain situations to create specific effects. It's all about intent. Have you heard about dysonnance? It's term for colors that are not balanced together, but it doesn't mean they're wrong and I've seen artist use them to their advantage.

Also, the more details there is, the best piece you get has got to be the thing I disagree with the most. I could bet my right hand that you have never had a design class. Simplifying is a skill and it can create amazingly beatiful pieces. Just look at the old chinese masters who would do 4 or 5 ink strokes on paper, and everything was there. Those pieces were simple, pure and perfect, and yet they hardly used any of your methods.

I'm looking for your gallery - you are pro, but this tutor still more for novice artist, which never heard about "reflection", "inderect illuminations" and etc; which draw ugly-faced people with short arms and big heads
Debate on the theme of colors - is meaningless. It's like discussing who is better, Dali or Rembrand... However, I writed that "color must be bueatiful and not necessarily realistic". But i think - it's not right, if beginer artist yesterday take pencil in hands at first time, and today start drawing with dysonnance color theory
About details - I totally agree with you. I put "details" on last place by relevance in this tutor. And i'm just mean that many details can be bring more favs in pop DA
p.s. yes, i'm never hed design class or any another drawing classes. I'm just novice artist. I'm drawing only 1 year, and don't know very much. This tutor - just reminder for something things
Thank you for comment

You know, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I think the creator used the wrong word. I don't think he/she meant "Here's how to make beautiful art", I think he/she really meant "Here's how to make art that looks similar to what's mainstream and popular on dA right now." (And the closest work I can think of would be "How to make popular art", which probably wouldn't fly on a site that constantly calls users out on trying to become popular.)

So when I look at this, for me (feel free to disagree) it's not so much about experimentation with art or honestly how to even become really good at a certain technique. It's more about tips and tricks to make your work more widely accepted and appealing to a mainstream (dA) audience.

MasterTeacher In reply to whiskeyii [2011-11-22 09:28:23 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you are totaly right!... Word "beautiful" is relative and subjective... but it's more understable than words "popular on DA")

Endless-Ness In reply to whiskeyii [2011-11-22 01:04:32 +0000 UTC]

Hey I think you're probably right! If he meant to say "how to make appealing art" the whole thing suddenly makes much more sense.

Zorrowl In reply to ??? [2011-11-21 22:43:26 +0000 UTC]

This is amazing! It tells you everything that makes you think, 'why is their piece so much better than mine?' It really spells out what you need to be a great artist.

There's some aspects that bug me like how over general and rushed every aspect is, since you're covering every element there is when it comes to a good illustration. A lot of this stuff might fly over beginners, but I think this is a great illustration reminder for those who already have a better grasp of these things.

Very nice! While some of these are a bit opinionated (I personally like saturated, retina-bleeding pictures), this is very helpful!

Yes, colors are very subjective. There are many beautifull pictures with extra saturated colors and there are beautifull pics with whole pale colors. I'm just show classic\standart rules

CG-Sphinx In reply to ??? [2011-11-21 21:40:04 +0000 UTC]

A great grab-together of things you can learn on the internet.
Some stuff is put a bit harshly but that ain't no bad way to teach.

Though the 'Result' part, and some minor things don't make sense but after a bit of practice and experience along with finding a more personal way in art people will easily nitpick away at those tiny flaws and move on.

Though a new title would suffice:
"Get off your ass and learn this shit, then get better yourself!"

Sorry, but I think that it is a bit offensive for these people in the "bad examples".

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

MasterTeacher In reply to Kialun [2011-11-22 09:08:53 +0000 UTC]

There are only 3 points where I used "bad" examples: bad faces, 2d-view, cave monsters.

bad faces: all artist sometimes was beginers and drawed such ugly faces. I think authors of this faces now more skilled and do not take offense at me

Cave monsters: very impressive and bueatiful picture, and i'm just write that MORE people like skyes and girls more than monsters and caves

2d-view: yes, here I must not put "red-cross" on picture.. just must write that this picture - standart\classic

then you learning in hight art school or any other art schools - teacher show you art of Rembrandt, da Vinchi, Rafael etc. but not his own art.

GioFD In reply to Kialun [2011-11-21 23:26:19 +0000 UTC]

exactly what I was thinking, I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't think this is such a great tutorial, I was quite offended by the first set of examples, good faces and bad faces, i mean for the ones whose drawing represent bad, it must be extremely painful.
And I kinda think that saying that your own drawing has so many good points, modesty much? not saying the picture isn't good, it's amazing, but I'd love some more modesty.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kialun In reply to GioFD [2011-11-21 23:47:38 +0000 UTC]

Yes, if your artwork is good is a good thing show some tutorial like "how i did...", but use the artwork which is not yours and show it like your pics is better than them is offensive and inpolite. I was a bit surprise with all these comments saying the great that it is.

exactly! and I quite don't like the vibe the deviant is giving us, showing us all good points about art then ending up saying "and I did them all", I seriously find it beautiful but I would have prefered some modesty.
