I found it mostly helpful but I did have my eyes grow a little large with surprise when you put down anatomy is too hard. Yes it may be difficult, but in order to draw people and animals well, you need to know how the muscles and the bones work on them. From what I've been taught, (coming from a college student going to an art collage) you need to know how the body works before being able to draw anime, or cartoons correctly. In order to know what to exaggerate in a cartoon or anime face, you need to know how it would be realistically first.

Overall I think it's a decent tutorial, but I think it can use some revision with wording and making it a little more non bias.

Also one little thing you can maybe add to make it better is putting down the use of reference. With reference usually your drawings will improve.

Yes, you must know how the muscles and the bones work on to draw correct body, but it's "next skill step". At first you must at least lern basicly proportions. I know many artist who draw incorrect proportions peolpe with short arms or short legs or something else big mistakes and at the same time, trying to draw muscles
Also... Maybe draw anatomy is not too hard, but it more difficult than draw trees or clouds)) I think, draw realistic colored faces (portrets) most difficulty at all over art.

\\In order to know what to exaggerate in a cartoon or anime face, \\you need to know how it would be realistically first.
Yes. But i writed about it in tutorial: "You must build face and body proportion - it's only way"

\\Also one little thing you can maybe add to make it better is \\putting down the use of reference
Reference is only tool. You can say: "My picture doesn't have beautiful colors and original subject", but you can not say: "My picture doesn't have reference"

Hmmmm

I find this "tutorial" very bias. I mean don't get me wrong, I did learn a few things, but other then that I did not really like it.
It's bias because you're saying what is appealing to YOU, not to me.

Take this for example: You're using anime for examples.... I personally do not like anime.
another example: this one ticked me off a little bit, but in the last "example" you're saying that dark and creepy is a No-no, which is not true at all. I mean you started out a little good, but half way in you get bias; and the ending, super bias.

I think if you want to make a good tutorial, you have to use ALL concepts of art, not just anime.
Point being: You want to make good tutorials, try not to be so bias, use all forms of art, have a great ending.
just voicing my opinion though.

I didn't really get the feeling that he meant dark and creepy pieces are a no-no. When I saw that part of the tutorial I understood that it is not so important how well painted it is but the emotions it evokes in you. If an artwork is stunningly executed but you don't get anything else from the piece, then it won't be saved in your memory, you won't really remember it for good. If a piece manages to evoke some kind of emotion in you then you are most likely to remember it in the future. Doesn't mean that it has to be a happy go round or a cry your heart out kind of picture, it can be dark and creepy but it HAS to make you feel and remember the fear and the dread you felt. I've seen countless of incredibly well drawn art that I haven't really faved or even remembered whatsoever because apart from being well drawn, they didn't convey anything to me. There are 5 minute doodles that can make me cry for 5 days straight, and there are masterpieces that keep me inspired and fascinated for ages too. It's about what you get from it not just whether it's kawaii desu yo or dark and scary.

I hope you can see my point of view Just felt like sharing my thoughts, don't want to be rude. Have a nice day

\\I find this "tutorial" very bias
Maybe.. All art is subjective

\\Take this for example: You're using anime for examples.... I \\personally do not like anime.
I warned at the beginning of the tut that it orient on anime. Maybe I must sign it "How to draw beautiful anime", but many points of this tut (like the FOREGROUND for example) suitable for any style

\\you're saying that dark and creepy is a No-no
I don't say this. I'm only say that MOST people more like skyes and girls than monsters and caves. For example: I don't like pop music, I like power-metal. But most people like pop more. And if you want many favs - drawing girls - the easiest way

Thank you for comment

This is a truly fantastic tutorial! I wanna thank you for this! Im sure all your hard work is going to make a lot of people better some day, myself included!!!

It's a shame though, that some of these people are "taking offense" and are conceited enough to think that this a personal blow to their own art! tutorials are an OPINION, A REFERENCE, A GUIDE, for --who'd a thought it!?-- EVERYONE!!!
You take what you like from it and go. Don't sit here and bash this amazing person for being something you could very well be, but won't take the time to do it!

Sry MT i just can't stand some of the comments im seeing. You keep being amazing and inspiring the world! I'd Fave this One-hundred times over if i could!

Don't think that the people bashing is only people who won't take the time to make pretty drawings XD Personally, I didn't like the way she tried to teach people. As though bashing lower-leveled artists would make everyone else a better artist. Or how, there is only one correct way to make a great picture.

Spirit-Reservoir In reply to Revur [2011-11-23 21:14:44 +0000 UTC]

That's my point though, the intent of the tutorial wasn't to bash ne thing, or to tell you the "correct" way to make a picture. It was to show the elements that are found in all great pieces weather they be cartoon, anime, realistic or other wise. Now depending on what your style is you can look at the tutorial and determine what it is you lack and fix it.
I found some of the bad examples were to my liking and if it were up to me I'd of kept it that way and Im free to do that! because no matter wat, at the end of the day my work MY work and a tutorial is a tutorial, not a way of life.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Revur In reply to Spirit-Reservoir [2011-11-26 21:28:44 +0000 UTC]

I'm not saying that her -intent- was to bash people, but it is telling people how to do it the right way. The tutorial has a lot of good stuff in it, I just don't like the way she tells it. There is only examples, telling you that this is right and this is wrong, and that's what I don't like. It's easy to follow, but easy to get offended by too. I'm not offended by this tutorial, I'm just trying to explain why some people might get offended.
And of course you're free to that, and your work is your own. I never said it wasn't.

I think most people find this offending because of the wording orz (but it's understandable since english is not your native language) umm.. some of these are definitely helpful tips but a lot of it seems like a personal preferences.. like I agree that some terms like anatomy, lighting, depth, and composition since they are techniques and elements of art.. but not ALL of these MUST be found in a piece to be considered "beautiful"-sure they may create a detailed and eye catching piece, but even simple art can be attractive. If there is a lot going on in a picture, it may be hard to find a subject to focus on. Also take into consideration that anime is not exactly proportional since many features are exaggerated (big eyes, small noses, elongated limbs and etc). It may be interesting to have a variety of material and lighting, but a flat picture may create a blunt impact. The elements you decide to use contribute to your style. What I find most insulting is that you use adjectives such as 'beautiful, smart, correct' verses 'ugly, bad, etc'.. everyone starts somewhere and although some tips may create appealing art that isn't necessarily true for all cases.

You took this lesson too seriously. In art, there is nothing objective. Any opinion or any methods - subjective. Word "bueatiful" - doubly subjective. Someone like anime, someone - realism, someone - cubism and etc. you can not indulge every creature I made this tutorial like reminder (I myself sometimes forgot about any points of this tutorial when start draw new pic). Many people find this tutorial useful - I'm glad for them.

ohnono orz my wording is pretty bad as well @///@ You're right! Art is subjective. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" aksdflasj I just meant to say that the wording may come across as insulting to some since there are also examples of 'bad' or 'ugly' art. I think that this is more of a tutorial to refine your skills and that yes many of the things you show is helpful! I just also meant to say that you don't need to use all of these elements to produce great art xD (like the checklist) // orz

With this "tutorial" you're just saying that you won't do nothing cool if you do that expression and stuff, but you don't understand that EVERY artist starts with not-so-great-drawings , until you, and you're saying in this tutorial to not lurn anything with time and practice and are saying "just be a professional now!!"
And other thing, all "the good exemples" are not just anime drawings, by the way i saw 2-3 drawings as good examples that you used the same expression in the "not-good" but the are different just because the're "anime- realistic" .
And one thing, this is not a tutorial, this is a message, saying "Draw like this! If you don't , you're not good enough!"

MasterTeacher In reply to marinajk18 [2011-11-23 09:48:59 +0000 UTC]

For example, you know how to draw nice people, you have nice anatomy and bueatiful face, you can build any poses in any vids. But your picture have not enough favs. Why?.. Because (when you draw) you forgot about foreground (every one can draw it, it's not requires skill), about materials, about subject and etc.
