Description "The wind swung the multitude of snowflakes around, like millions of tiny razors, melting on his face. The ship creaked under a new assault of the waves, mourning deep with its wooden voice, dangerously leaning to its side while the freezing water of the sea swept over the deck, pooling under his feet. Tudor took a deep breath and steadied himself, grasping the staff and reaching deep within for the Call. His first uttered words got lost in the howl of the wind and the moan of the beaten boat, whispers compared with the voice of the wild winds. But soon his voice grew, a sound resonating eerily in the snowstorm, a deep buzz vibrating in the cold air with strange, arcane power. The pooling water on the deck started moving around, shifting against the natural movement of the ship, making small streams around the man, gathering before him and twisting itself, like winding wire, into the air, higher and higher. It started shaping itself into something like a serpent made of water, yet becoming alive, hissing furiously at first, like trying to oppose the command of the wizard, swinging wildly from side to side and mawing at the air with a fresh, amphibian head. From the whirling water, eyes, beaming with energy opened and the elemental, freshly pulled out of its plane, steadied and tilted its head listening the command..."

Sorry, couldn't help myself. I used to do this a lot, add a story to my images. Tudor is a d&d character, a former farmer turned wizard. I don't know anything about his situation here really but I just came with what I imagined was happening.

Indeed it is: storm at sea, a magic boat and a wizard summoning elementals - what more can you want?

Hehe, fairly a hard subject. I still learn to deal with water translucency and light reflection.

The character himself its a farmer turned wizard but I always felt judging by the description that the client brought some western influence into him. I'm glad you liked the story.

Its salt water, doesn't freeze as easily as sweet water.

Thank you for the kind words. Yes, I'm thinking I should do that. I used to be a bit of a writer too but painting took precedent and slowly even the small stories disappeared (mainly because I felt they were the stories of my clients, as were the character and not mine). But I'll try to revive that habit, thank you for the encouragement.

I wanted it to look like water but I don't know how much I managed that. I did pretty good I think but there is always a risk that it looks too much like ice or glass.

Water is always difficult to paint, at least for me. There is always a risk to look too much like glass or like ice. I think this time I might have got it right 'tho.

Its a water elemental but I felt like, do to the fluid nature of water, a resemblance with a snake its the best way to go.

The snake is funny
It is great. I like the man's clothes, you always make it look perfect. Though I think the deck is quite empty...

MatesLaurentiu In reply to Dungeon-Spirit [2013-04-02 14:56:49 +0000 UTC]

The client never mentioned any kind of crew for the ship so I guessed the ship might be magical (not unusual with high level adventurers). Originally I had some barrels rolling around but I realize not sailor would ever let stuff on the bridge untied, especially during storms, so I took them out.

Dungeon-Spirit In reply to MatesLaurentiu [2013-04-02 16:12:26 +0000 UTC]

There might be not only barrels... maybe some gratings covering the hold or whatever.
Well, that's my humble opinion

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

MatesLaurentiu In reply to Dungeon-Spirit [2013-04-02 22:15:16 +0000 UTC]

True, but those are usually placed towards the middle of the ship, thus, out of sight in this case. But hey, a ship's deck is meant to be spacious, battles are fought on it at times.

Dungeon-Spirit In reply to MatesLaurentiu [2013-04-03 12:58:23 +0000 UTC]

And they used to keep prisoners under the deck And well, a grating is such a good chance to make an enemy break his leg...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MatesLaurentiu In reply to Dungeon-Spirit [2013-04-03 14:33:39 +0000 UTC]

They were and it is indeed but as I said, the grating would be towards the middle of the deck, so not visible in the image anyways. I'll do try to keep my background a bit more busier next time 'tho.

Katzztar In reply to Dungeon-Spirit [2013-04-02 20:35:27 +0000 UTC]

I'm not familiar with the sailing ships... but wouldn't the grating for the hold be near the middle of the ship deck? But like I said, I'm not familiar with the sail ships, I'm just mentioning what I've managed to see online. That's why I'm asking, I'd like to know.

This looks off to the side so the middle doesn't show but would be located to the right side of the picture.

Dungeon-Spirit In reply to Katzztar [2013-04-03 13:00:36 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'm not quite familiar also. I think it depends of the size or purpose of the ship. I said so just because I thought the deck would look less empty... That's how I just see it.
