Description
Roman Empire was divided into provinces (provinciae, sing. provincia) and words in many languages come from these Latin words. In addition, some European countries are or were composed of provinces. Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and Belgium until today. France until 1790, Prussia until its official dissolution in 1947 (pre-WWI version is shown though) and Portugal until 1976. United Kingdom used word province until 1783 but only for North American colonies. Map is about it all. Local versions of Latin word provincia are shown.Related content

how would you divide Portugal in provincias if it was, say, part of an Iberian confederation? Their administrative history is a real mess!

That's a good question. Yes, they deleted all provinces and created districts, Portugal has more populous towns than Spain and all district capitals could be Spanish province capital towns. I have to think about this topic and I'll possibly elaborate a map about that soon...

yes but they also changed internal borders, like not only delated provinces and regrouped the comunitades intermunicipales in new district, so that it is kind of hard to understand anything out of it...it takes few minutes to reconstruct it...

Yes but I think that you should balance the surface with Spanish (or other Iberian) provinces...
Anyway it is, make a a federal Iberia map. It's gonna be very interesting ^^

Yes, they changed totally their administrative divisions. I think current districts are perfect for Portugal but they would be too many if Portugal were part of a Greater Spain or federal Iberia. Portuguese area is similar to areas of Castile and LeΓ³n (9 provinces) or Andalusia (8 provinces). Maybe 8 or 9 provinces would be a good number for a non-independent Portugal...

Indeed. Maybe you can make even more than one comunidad autΓ³noma out of today Portugal...I suggest Algarve e Alentejo and Beira e Douro, together with an autonomous community for Lisboa ^^
