EVENT
Akila gets sick due to the cold weather. Meanwhile, Kalene encouters a turtle.

           It had not been long since Akila and her daughter, Kalene, joined Ulrich. Unsurprisingly, the timid mare was still quite shy of her new lead; she wasn’t sure if she was ready to let him have that title over her. She still didn’t know him that well. The stoic stallion lead them quietly, giving them no cause for distrust, but also not being very friendly. He didn’t make any small talk, and neither did they. It was all quite awkward to begin with. But Akila did find some comfort in knowing that when she and Kalene needed to rest, there was a pair of powerful eyes watching over them. Although he was quite subdued and serious, Ulrich hadn’t made any advances on Akila. He hardly touched her, knowing that one wrong move could frighten her enough to bolt. His experience with skittish mares was not something to be overlooked, and Akila quickly picked up on it.
About a week after they joined together, a cold winter wind blew in. The land had already shown signs of the coming season, but up until this point it had only been mildly chilly temperatures. By the end of the day, the temperature had dropped significantly. So much so, that Ulrich sought shelter for him and the mares under a canopy of fallen trees that had created a perfect shelter. It was snug, but they all fit pretty well. Ulrich stood near the entrance, while Akila and Kalene huddled in the back.

Overnight, it seemed the world had been bathed in white. The winter’s first snow had fallen while they slept, and it was frigid. The blanket of white wasn’t deep, but it was enough to cover everything in sight. Ulrich lifted his head, staring out at the bright world in front of him; it was peaceful and serene. Drops of sunlight trickled in through the branches in the trees, and the bird song had begun.

Ah CHOO!

The red stallion turned to look behind him, where Akila stood. She dropped her head in embarrassment. It had obviously been her that sneezed. Her ears felt warm and she sniffled, two obvious signs that she had caught a cold overnight. Kalene seemed fine, which Akila was thankful for, but it still would be difficult being sick.

”We will go south. It will be warmer there.” Ulrich told them simply, his voice uncharacteristically gentle. Something about the way he said that made Akila’s stomach flutter. Maybe it was just from the cold.

As much as Ulrich would have liked to keep Akila here to let her rest and recuperate from her cold, he knew it was best to get somewhere warmer before they were stuck in the harsh throes of winter. He lead them out and toward a stream. Along the way, they nabbed some dried grass that stuck up out of the snow. The food helped Akila feel better, but she still felt rather groggy, and was lagging behind. Ulrich kept his pace with her, not allowing her to be left behind.

As they came upon the stream, Kalene cantered forward in excitement ,her long yearling legs kicking up bits of snow behind her. She bent her neck and touched her lips to the surface of the water, expecting to feel cold water and get a drink. Instead, her mouth met ice. The surface of the stream had frozen over. Albiet, the layer was thin and if she had stepped on it, it would break, but she still became mesmerized by it.

”Whoa!” She said aloud, startling both Akila and Ulrich. Ulrich trotted up beside the pale foal, suspecting something had happened. When he saw that it was just frozen water, he snorted. He lifted his hoof to break it, but just as he did, Kalene bumped him with her shoulder.

”Wait! Look!” She exclaimed. Beneath the ice, a turtle swam passed. It looked up at them for a moment, before continuing on, paddling its way downstream. ”Cool!” Kalene followed it a ways, before Akila called her back. The foal gleefully trotted up beside her mother, wearing a silly gin.

Ulrich was rather surprised as he watched the two. Kalene had not spoken more than two words before this, so her enthusiasm caught him off guard. However, as he watched them, he felt that familiar tug at his heart. This was what he was supposed to be doing; caring for a herd. Although Akila was sick, the smile on her face as she nuzzled her daughter was enough evidence to Ulrich that she was happy. And he wanted to keep her that way. He felt a small smile tug at his own lips as he watched them.
