I know Dark Gaia can basically split the planet into pieces and create minions of various sizes and strengths.....
And then it can also protect itself with a forcefield...

Queen Metallia has the power to destroy the Solar System, and covered the entire planet in darkness with her mere arrival.
HOWEVER, she has a weak point. If Perfect Dark Gaia is able to break the barrier protecting it, the victory is as good as his.

Dark Gaia thrives in darkness...I think that was his goal...
(Side note: eggman achieved his life goal in unleashed... He created eggmanland!)

That's true, but the same can be said for her since her power grows as time goes on.
Queen Metallia has many impressive feats, even being completely immune to the Legendary Silver Crystal before the reconstruction of the Crystal Tower. Her defense is much weaker near the weakpoint, but still strong enough to block the Legendary Silver Crystal.
I'm trying hard not to give any spoilers, but it's hard when talking about who would win a battle.
Also, too bad Eggmanland didn't last...Would've been a great place to go on vacation...

I just realized a mistake I made in an earlier reply. Dumb me, so i'll fix that real quick.
The 'darkness' that covered the planet upon Queen Metallia's arrival wasn't just darkness, it was her. The darkness consuming the planet was all part of her body.
Oh yeah, Sonic obviously wouldn't want to go there...He'd just want to smash it!

Queen Metallia is definitely NOT a form of Light Gaia, she's not really a form of any Gaia since she was spawned from the Sun.
The only remote connection she has to Earth is wanting to wipe out all life on it.

That kind of depends on which version you played. I played it on the Wii/PS2, so the final boss was Super Sonic VS Dark Gaia without Chip.Β In the XBOX360/PS3 versions of the game, it was like you said.
