Description "Blaster vs. Straxus: Axe of Vengeance"
Prints available!
In the old Marvel comics , the Autobot Blaster was part of a terrori insurge resistance cell on Cybertron operating against a Decepticon provincial governor, Lord Straxus . Blaster destroyed Straxus, and though Straxus did return a couple of times in the Marvel UK comics , he never had the opportunity to take revenge.

Well, over twenty years later, Hasbro finally made a Straxus toy , and as it happens, Blaster had gotten a new toy (with a bird-buddy, Blockrock ) just a couple of years earlier. Which was also when the toy-only character Nemesis Prime came out, whose packaging bio described him as a mad clone of Optimus Prime created by Straxus. So it seemed entirely appropriate to bring all these guys together.

(A bit of trivia: Hasbro couldn't use the name "Straxus" on his toy for copyright reasons, so they called him "Darkmount" instead. That's the name of his towering fortress , which toppled when the Autobots detonated explosives beneath it. Guess he never forgot.)

I will force Hasbro to use Straxus again... Only add in the High Lorg Governor part.

I like the name "Straxus" more than the name Hasbro gave him.

MERCY IS NOT DISPENSED HERE, FOOL, ONLY AWESOMENESS!

Poor Blockrock, though. He turns into bomb. Also, I usually use Universe Blaster for Bluster, but now...

Heh. I'm happy to be considered an awesomeness dispenser!

And maybe Blockrock is K-Class ?

Heh, I remember that fight -- the poor-excuses never had a chance, but they were far from cake walks either! That's rockin' coloring right there; the reds, blues, and blacks contrast and complement each other splendidly. I got to admit that Straxus' weapon is pretty classy, and I'll never forget that creepy Nemesis Prime; I hate clones! Wonderful work, my friend -- not even Soundwave could have put forth such an imagination if we gave him a millenia to come up with such a piece!

Always nice when a subject of one of my drawings is also a fan of it. Thanks for the kind words!

Did you use the paintjob for Takara's United Straxus? The upper half of his arms are blue instead of red.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

MattDrawsRobots In reply to unicronagent13 [2011-03-01 18:49:48 +0000 UTC]

Yep, I wanted Blaster and Blockrock to "own" all the warm tones.

unicronagent13 In reply to MattDrawsRobots [2011-03-07 00:24:48 +0000 UTC]

Doesn't it suck that Takara gets to use the trademark "Straxus" and Hasbro can't? BTW, who/what/when/where/why/how/towhatextent does the TM Straxus belong to?

MattDrawsRobots In reply to unicronagent13 [2011-03-07 01:10:51 +0000 UTC]

Probably Marvel, since the character was created in their comics.

As always, you impress me with the sheer varitety of your styles and compositions. This works as a nice counterpart to your MACHINE WARS Soundwave piece as well.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

MattDrawsRobots In reply to Trecathlus [2010-10-27 00:50:15 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! It's interesting you mention the Soundwave piece... I could also see Blaster's new toy being an old, pre-Earth body. But this pic takes place sometime after the G1 comic, so I figure he went back to Cybertron and ditched the boombox mode. In fact, I like to think that he was given governorship of Polyhex under the Autobot dominion that the last issue seemed to end with. Which would make the circumstances of Straxus's revenge nicely ironic.

I normally just collect G1, but because I loved his character in the old school comics, I might just get him.

JZLobo In reply to hellbat [2010-10-26 16:03:53 +0000 UTC]

I mostly collect just G1 homages these days - less pricey and more poseable.

Yeah I know what you mean. The last one I bought was Arcee (Valkyrie) earlier this year. I don't really buy many these days, and I only really need Killbison from Breast Force and Diaclone police Sunstreaker (and one of Predakings fists)to finish my collection.

I absolutely love the old Marvel comics, I've got a few of G1 n a couple of G2, but they're awesome. Gotta luv the classics. This is badass

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

MattDrawsRobots In reply to Runael [2010-10-27 00:40:57 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Yeah, the old Marvel stuff will always have a place in my heart, just like the G1 'toon. But man, those early issues had such stiff dialogue, and the art for the original Straxus storyline in particular was pretty shoddy. The UK followup where he was a head in a jar was a lot better all the way around.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Runael In reply to MattDrawsRobots [2010-10-27 01:00:50 +0000 UTC]

Oh I luv G1, I had to have the whole series lol. Oh ya I remember I saw those particular comics, though I never found them so I haven't read them. I had heard of Straxus before, I had just never read about him

JZLobo [2010-10-24 22:04:41 +0000 UTC]

I always thought that was a sad excuse for a Blaster toy, but I absolutely love those other two figures!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

MattDrawsRobots In reply to JZLobo [2010-10-27 00:27:43 +0000 UTC]

Well, you know me - the crappier the toy, the more appealing the challenge of awesomification!

JZLobo In reply to MattDrawsRobots [2010-10-27 03:04:30 +0000 UTC]

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

MattDrawsRobots In reply to JZLobo [2010-10-27 18:18:18 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I feel a little cheatsy pulling the faceplate-falls-away-so-you-can-see-his-old-face trick, but there aren't too many alternatives. Glad you dig it!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

JZLobo In reply to MattDrawsRobots [2010-10-27 23:33:10 +0000 UTC]

I prefer the faceplate over his face anyway, makes him look more distinct. I wish more artists would represent him that way.

No, I'm talking about all Blaster art in general.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

MattDrawsRobots In reply to JZLobo [2010-10-28 03:23:51 +0000 UTC]

Ah, do you mean the vaguely Optimus-Primal-like look the original toy had going on ? Yeah, that is distinctive and neat. I was specifically going for his old comic look , but I could see trying to meld the old and new toys a bit...

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

JZLobo In reply to MattDrawsRobots [2010-10-28 03:29:21 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I meant the kind-of cross between a medieval visor and Batman's cowl that he had in the Marvel comics.
