Description The men could hear them even over the thunder and pounding waves. Hundreds of seagulls swarmed the sky just beyond the dock in a squawking, swirling mass. The saying goes that animals know when calamity will strike long before people do; none of the workers save a handful wanted to stick around and see what horror was headed for shore.

It must have been morbid curiosity that kept those last few men there. When Lioness and the giant arrived, they dared to peek out. She stood there, a towering sentinel, defiant in the face of so much nature as she waited for the inevitable confrontation.

This piece offered me a lot of opportunities to grow my skills as an artist and expand the world of Vigilant Lioness. Prior to this, I'd never painted the ocean or birds. Same with the industrial elements. I thought I knew what a crane or a buoy looked like, but I spent a lot of time pouring over reference discovering just how little I actually knew about them. It feels good to tackle new subjects!

By far though, my favorite part of painting this was working with an absolutely fantastic model that I'd never worked with before, and I'm thrilled to introduce the first heroine of color in Vigilant Lioness. Celebrating the strong, non-traditional bodies that female athletes have worked so hard to build is a core part of my project, and that strength comes in a multitude of colors. I'm looking forward to exploring more of that diversity in my future paintings!

As always, there's more giants and giant monsters in the works, so stay tuned!

Bulwark, 2018, oil on canvas, 27 x 48 inches.

Fantastic effects all around from the waves crashing and the clouds swirling, I'm guessing lightning is flashing off screen to help provide illumination (and to compliment her outfit what with the bolt symbol striking down from the bra. The elements and the protector are exuding such power and she is tough enough to put her hands on her hips instead of brace against the rushing water.

If she can project an image of confidence that will help those tuning in to assuage them that things are going to be okay.

You do bodies so wonderfully, great proportions and anatomy comprehension. Even the birds are lively despite being your first time with them. And the non-living things like the buoys and structures are what I would imagine for this setting.

Thank you so much! I definitely feel like I leveled up with this one. Painting the figures is my favorite part of the entire process, so I'm glad to hear they're going over well. Designing patterns inspired by super sentai and vintage swim suits is a lot of fun. I'm imagining each fighter wears an outfit she picked out that matches her own taste and aesthetic. Gives me a good excuse to make a new look for each painting too haha!
