Description Remember, kids - never use strength-enhancing laser-firing extra-terrestrial power gauntlets as bottle openers, unless you happen to enjoy finding jagged shards of broken glass floating in your Heineken. In real life, too.

The beer-loving primate pictured here is Chip, star of a smashingly funny series of comics entitled Furious Fist of the Drunken Monkey. His creator, Rich Stahnke, was kind enough to draw Apeman and Monkeyboy many moons ago for a promotional poster , and I thought it was way past time I returned the favour and did a doodling for him.

Working on this piece gave me the chance to experiment with lighting effects in Photoshop, and the whole thing came together better than I'd dared to hope; I'm especially pleased with the gauntlet, which actually does look like it's glowing, and the dazzley flash from his fingertip. I may yet get the hang of this digital colouring malarkey.

Chip's copyright resides with the marvellous Mr Stahnke, whose arty exploits can be followed on that Facebook they have now. Rascally infringey persons will be subject to a furious fist in the face from a surly humanoid chimp with a hangover.

Hard to drink from a broken bottle too!

Indeed, although super-powered primates are equipped for the task better than most on account of their impervious lips.

Nice, he's got a funny little expression and a nice clear silhouette. I like his costume too. I think this could be improved by watching the relationship between the legs and the patella. The way the upper part of the leg connects to the bottom part looks a little bit awkward, but other then that this looks pretty cool.

Ta, fella! I see what you mean about the legs; I think my colouring may have accentuated things a bit strangely round the knees, in fact. Something to watch for next time!

No problem, I look forward to seeing what you make next.

Impressive! Lighting is at its best on this picture! Getting some basic effects can be a bit hard to do sometimes on another medium...!

That gauntlet is simply devastating... Even the sheer common action of pointing would be a deadly one!
But I do feel bad for him, he can smash a bottle of liquor unintentionally if he's not being careful...!

Cheers muchly for the compliments; I remain greatly pleased with how this one turned out, and I'm glad you like it too. And yes, pointing can be lethal with that gauntlet activated. You wouldn't want to try and give anyone directions while wearing it.

It could certainly come in handy for carrying heavy bags of shopping, although you'd have to be careful not to disintegrate them by accident. Or the shop.

Chip, did you forge to set that thing's power to low again? XD

MatthewSmith In reply to Letdragon [2011-09-10 22:43:13 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure it's got a "low" setting; I think it's permanently stuck on "obliterate".
