Description
By Rich StahnkeBefore Apeman and Monkeyboy made their first appearance in the pages of Bubba the Redneck Werewolf's Super Sci-Fi Special, the publishers - a smashing independent company called Silent Devil - put a great deal of effort into promoting the comic and our characters. They advertised the book on the net and in several of their other titles, they included a feature about AM and MB on the front page of their website, and they also produced a special poster starring the super-powered primates and several other simian characters, prints of which were used to decorate their stand at various conventions - and the image above is a digital reproduction. Of it.
The whole "Year of the Monkey" thing came about as the result of a happy coincidence - it just so happened that AM and MB's debut coincided with the release of two other ape-related comics from Silent Devil, and they hit upon the splendid idea of promoting all three titles together. The other comics were Monkey vs Lemur, a fantastically funny thing created by Chris Moreno and Ken Lillie-Paetz, and Furious Fist of the Drunken Monkey, an action-packed (and also highly amusing) three-part mini series written and drawn by a talented fellow named Rich Stahnke. It was he who created the poster, and as you can see, he did a terrific job of rendering Apeman and Monkeyboy in glorious techno-colour. Curiously enough, Larry and I had no idea that the poster was even being created until after it was finished - we just happened upon it on the Silent Devil website one day, which was an excellent surprise.
Just so you know, the characters at the top are Lemur and Monkey (from Monkey vs Lemur, obv), and the guy in the middle is Chip, the star of Mr Stahnke's thoroughly groovesome comic. If you'd like to find out more about Furious Fist of the Drunken Monkey, and see more of Rich's ace artwork, simply click the following linky bit [link] and you'll be transported directly to his personal MySpace place, which is full of nifty stuff. Go on, you know you want to.

I really gotta get a better comic store, if it ain't Marvel or DC they ain't carrying it. I used to go ape (no pun intended, well okay maybe a little) for funny independent stuff and since I moved back in '03 I can't find any of it.

It can be tricky to track down the indies; there are a couple of comic stores I go to that carry a good mix of mainstream and independent titles, but they still miss a lot of things, so I try to keep an eye on the web for upcoming releases from smaller publishers and order them specially.
Silent Devil are still putting out some nifty stuff, but Bubba the Redneck Werewolf and a whole host of other funky comicky things are now being produced by Scare Tactix Graphix, an indie publisher that's developing rather splendidly. The website is here: [link] , and I can particularly recommend the latest issues of Bubba and Billy the Monster Hunter because they feature the artwork of Shawn Surface, who is ace.
