Description This is an uncoloured page from the first Apeman and Monkeyboy adventure, entitled Stomp!, which appeared in the Sci-Fi Special edition of Bubba the Redneck Werewolf, published in March 2006. Here we can see the heroes of the piece entering their top secret headquarters by means of a special tyre swing (their base is hidden underneath a zoo, you see), and approaching the vastly intelligent supercomputer that sits in the centre of the place. The base itself is called The Monkeyhouse, and the computer is known as SAL, which stands for Sentient Artificial Lifeform. She was constructed by Clarence and Bobo over the course of many months from all kinds of technological odds and ends salvaged from wasteful humans, and she helps the simian superheroes to fight nasty folk by monitoring satellite information for news of evil doings. Fans of a certain BBC comedy series should be able to guess who inspired SAL’s appearance on the facial readout monitor, and fans of another BBC comedy series will hopefully spot the reference to one of the most delightfully terrible pop songs ever recorded.

Looking back at this, I occasionally wonder how I managed to draw it at all. I must have been on a particularly perky brand of tea that week.

Keep up the cool work

Believe it or not, the cheese (it's a chunk of mozzarella, as it happens) is a vital part of the very first Apeman and Monkeyboy story. It's a key ingredient in a special shampoo that Clarence makes in an effort to remove a piece of chewing gum from Bobo's fur, but unfortunately he doesn't get the proportions quite right, and instead of dissolving the gum the formula changes its molecular structure in a highly peculiar manner. I can't reveal too much more without spoiling the end of the story, but ultimately the chemically-altered gum proves to be more useful than you might imagine...

The Apeman and Monkeyboy comic will only be appearing in Bubba the Redneck Werewolf or will that be appearing as a separate title?

Everything's still a bit sketchy at the moment, but there are plans for AM and MB to have their own comic at some point in the future. For the time being, their exploits will continue to appear within the pages of Bubba the Redneck Werewolf - the next issue is due out in early 2007 (more or less), and I believe you can still buy copies of the Sci-Fi Special (containing AM and MB's comicky debut) over at the official Bubba website. [link] Any new developments will be reported here, so keep watching the skies! Or, more correctly, your computer monitor.

SAL's face display reminds me of Holly from Red Dwarf. When Holly was female, I mean. X3

Award yourself 5,000 bonus points and a jelly baby! SAL's look is indeed based on Holly (as played by the lovely Hattie Hayridge), although SAL is rather less inept than the Dwarf's resident senile computer. She can count without banging her head on the screen, for instance.
