Description the "Finish Avatar" project week Fifteen. Leave me a suggestion for a picture

Featured in: "Seige on the North: Part Two"

...

"The monkey is reaching
For the moon in the water.
Until death overtakes him
He'll never give up.
If he'd let go the branch and
Disappear in the deep pool,
The whole world would shine
With dazzling pureness."

From "The Monkey Is Reaching" by Hakuin (1686-1768). It relates to an even more ancient parable from the Asian continent, with so many different variations that it's exact origin cannot be traced.

Zhao's tale is a tragic one. For many long years he pursued the "shinier" things in life like "Honor" and "Power"... never noticing how it was dragging him to his death.

It's spooky how similar his plight is to the doomed monkey's. Chasing the Moon in the pond, Blind to the delicate balance of the powers that be, drowned in the object of his desire. Even his brutish attitude, his curious exploration of the Library, his inability to control his own strength... are all famous attributes of the monkey in Chinese lore. Don't believe me? Read the first seven chapters of the ancient Chinese tale "Journey to the West" about the "Monkey King" who thought himself "Equal to Heaven" which sounds eerily similar to "Moonslayer" in concept.

By following his pride, he is blindly walking directly into his demise... drowning in a pool of arrogance....

But, even the Monkey King is given a chance to redeem himself (seen through the rest of the tale "Journey to the West"). And, while we see Zhao carried away in the palm of the Ocean Spirit... we never truly watch him die.

took advantage of this loop-hole to make easily the best fan-made Avatar comic (a whopping 447 pages in total) Here's page one:

I urge you to read it. Partly because it flows so perfectly with Zhao's connection to The Monkey King... but mostly because it's absolutely brilliant and you all should read it

I don't know if Mike and Bryan intened Zhao's story to mirror that ancient Asian parable, and I don't know if *rufftoon meant for her story to follow the "redemption" idea of "Journey to the West" so fluidly... but it seems so perfect that they do. Almost as if "fate" had a hand in it

Hopefully all of this made sense, and it's not just me rambling on about monkeys, and ancient literature...

I just saw this episode a few days ago. Awesome rendition and analysis of a supremely horrid moment.
And regarding Journey To The West, Zhao certainly displayed both the spitefulness and smarts of a monkey in this scene! Big time.

You're welcome.

By the way, what Zhao did to that poor sacred koi reminds me of the white lions of Timbavati. Now, Timbavati is an area in NE South Africa where the lions carry a gene for white fur and blue eyes. The local Shagaan people consider the white lions to be holy, sacred creatures-like certain waterbenders-that were sent by the sun god 300 years ago.

Europeans first saw these white lions in 1928, and their existence was first proven in 1972. Now, Timbavati is not a park, but a wilderness area where hunting is allowed. Over time, the sacred white lions of the Shagaan, or tan lions that carried the gene for whiteness, were shot for trophies or captured for zoos, animal shows like Sigfried and Roy, and worst of all, to be bred for canned hunting operations!

Screwed up as it is, if you have between $50,000-$170,000 and a good rifle, you can go to South Africa and shoot a tame, inbred white lion in a brushy pasture. What losers these people are.

Happily though, thanks to a wonderful woman named Linda Tucker, the sacred white lions of the Shagaan-and tan ones that carry the gene-, after an absence of 14 years, were reintroduced back into the wild in 2008, and are producing cubs!

P.S. Speaking of sacred, Timbavati is at the same longitude as the Sphinx and Great Zimbabwe. Coincidence?

P.P.S. I'm not kidding about the canned hunting. See this disgusting ad here: [link]

Thanks

Actually, I painted it regularly then used a gradient map to change everything into shades of red and lowered the opacity to the level I wanted it (that's why the ice has a purplish hue to them.... I like it better then pure red). If I wanted to, I could have rendered everything in shades of grey and gotten to about the same point. At that point, I could've made everything yellow or green or pink

I will definitely have to check out that comic! I never thought about the possibility of Zhao surviving before!

What about the show isn't well written? Actually... Azula's breakdown felt sudden to me... but other than that?
I should probably know this, but... who is Jason Isaacs?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mattierial In reply to TheStoryNeverEnds [2011-04-22 00:26:38 +0000 UTC]

I think her break down was well placed. Her friends just betrayed her... her brother was able to match her in battle (on the air ships at the air temple), when she thought herself much better than him, and she thought her father didn't trust her with power. She was alone, with no one to admire her or to boss around.

Jason Isaacs is Lucius Malfoy from Harry Potter

TheStoryNeverEnds In reply to Mattierial [2011-04-22 01:59:05 +0000 UTC]

No, I understand the process of her break down. Believe me, I have written quite lengthy character analyses on her. It just would have been nice if it had been just a bit more gradual, in my opinion. But the way it was was fine.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mattierial In reply to TheStoryNeverEnds [2011-04-22 18:28:42 +0000 UTC]

Yeah... I know what you mean. But, she's not one of the "main" main characters... so much of her breakdown could've occurred in the stuff we didn't see. I think from where she was talking to her servants and dismissing her guards to her complete disintegration was realistic enough.
