Description

...

the "Finish Avatar" project week Eighteen. Leave me a suggestion for a picture

Featured in: "Serpent's Pass" (yes... I already did one for this episode too.... but I started with the almost kiss and intended on doing it for the Seige of the North episode... then this scene came to me )

Picture's soundtrack: "She's So High Above Me" by Everclear [link] (I have no idea which show is featured in this video... but I thought it was a cute relationship, so I didn't look for a different one).
....

So... Most of the time I try to do pictures that don't need words to describe what's going on, provided you have a basic understanding of the show that it's from.

Sometimes though... words help direct the way the meaning is presented to the viewers. I think this is one of those times.

I may have made his "thoughts" a bit too passionate... I hope it's not too distracting . I just wanted it to feel as if he's thinking of the "could have beens"...

I think it's important that I added Suki's interaction at this point, so the picture is not JUST a depressing sulk... and pulls more towards a brighter future. Suki helps bring him out of the sorrow he feels, and makes him himself again.

I believe that Yue would have had a much different effect on Sokka over the long run as opposed to Suki. She wouldn't have been as tough or sarcastic, she wouldn't have been able to protect herself the way Suki did... it would have been much more tender. I can't imagine Yue grabbing him by his shirt and scolding him for kicks... and I think Sokka needed that influence to ground him.

....

I actually did two pictures for this finished picture. I did one of Sokka staring at the the moon with a huge blank spot to the right. And I did a full shot of Yue's and his embrace. I might put the embrace up as a single picture on Wednesday... It's like the most cliche almost kiss scene ever... with the whole cheesy leg pop and everything. I'm secretly really proud of it. Sooo... look forward to that

EDIT: Here it is:

I think the text and speech bubbles would look a bit nicer if you did them by hand.

Yeah...

Someone else suggested a different font ... I've just been using the default one in photoshop. I do not have "great" handwriting, but I could probably achieve a level of acceptability if I gave it the time.

I don't pretend to be a professional, or anything ... I'm just trying my best.

I agree with you that Suki differed Sokka's character but without true demonstration on how Yue could have defended herself I'd say she could have matured into a warrior with time possibly. Most sweet girls are more dangerous then they appear to be.

Take Toph and Suki for instance~

They never gave us depth enough about Yue to make assumptions of how she might or might not change Sokka.
Yes I am more of a fan for Yuokka but that's not where this opinion strays from. But I feel like him and Yue had a much stronger connection for some reason \: Its sad it had to end the way it did
Very lovely picture the shading and temperance of the colors is very beautiful~

I never said she couldn't have become a better warrior, or at least learned how to protect herself... but the fact that she would have had to learn would have added a completely different dynamic, both in how the story of the show was told and in their relationship. Being able to properly defend yourself doesn't spring out of nowhere, Toph and Suki had literally years of training to become proficient at it, she would only have had months (the time line of the whole series is one year). I think his protective nature towards her would have grounded him just as well as Suki's independence did, but it would have been "different." It would have changed Sokka like every other major conflict changed him... you can't just flip a major switch like this and not expect it to have any major effects.

Personally, I think both relationships were able to develop strong connections, but I wouldn't go as far as to say that he and Yue had a stronger one. They hardly knew each other... and the scenes that did go any deeper then simple flirting were diverted from being anything truly special by the fact that she was engaged (besides their final scene where she becomes the Moon Spirit). As it is, if not for the scene where she was taken from him forever, their connection was comparatively weak. So if by some miracle her sacrifice wasn't necessary (thereby removing all emotions felt and special moments between them from that scene), and she was able to leave with Sokka... they wouldn't have had that strong bond that developed at the end. If given the time, I have no doubt that what they did have could have developed into something really fantastic, but that's not what happened.

It is sad that it ended the way it did, leaving us guessing (like he is) at "what could have been." But, I think that sadness and loss helped define the series, giving it a more realistic feel because life is full of both good and bad. So, when we see the characters deal with problems, we get a sense that not everything goes right and we can identify with that.

Thank you for the comment

Of course you would expect him to act differently what I was meaning is nothing as opposed to your words but just in general in my thoughts Yue wasn't defenseless we never got to see a side of her where she in any way had to singularly defend herself. I wasn't edging to sound rudely or anything dear~
Thing is though without the Yue incident I feel like Sokka wouldn't be who he is in a natural respect I think losing her made him grow up a little more and Suki was there to ensure him happiness Yue could no longer give physically and emotionally.

No, no. I know. Its just a personal opinion on how you like to view a relationship despite facts and other peoples opinions. The last scene really put depth and a mark on they're relationship, I have just always been curious what it would have been like 'had' she lived. Probably an ending similar to the very fantastic finale of season one wouldn't have happened but in turn I'm still curious.

Hm, much like the Jet situation despite his faults he still manages to redeem himself in a manageable and heroic way, even with the dying part. Two good characters costly waged by life's courses. Its sad but its what made viewers vulnerable to its realism.

Nice to have such an engaging conversation on here about one of my favorite series, they others I have recently tried to discuss matters with are full of well...annoyances.

Also glad to see we agree on a lot of perspectives. Your very welcome for the comment.

I didn't take anything you said as rude ... I was just discussing a point in my description where our opinions diverged. I hope the rest of my reply didn't come off as defensive... because that wasn't my intention at all.

Of course I agree that the "Yue incident" (there really isn't a better way to label that interaction ) contributed a lot to his character, he matured in that moment... and it opened his heart to be able to love passionately again (in a roundabout way, once he was able to let her go). But in the same way, his first encounter with Suki helped him learn respect for women in general... and I think that contributed to how well he treated Yue. I like the back-and-forth way that both relationships contributed to each other and to how he loved romantically overall.

I have often wondered about the "what if's" from the end of season one.... but I like the way it did turn out. I'm sure the series would have been just as good if the creators had decided to follow that path, it's just hard to try and trace the chain of events should these small things have occurred differently.... especially since we don't know how exactly they would have resolved it all without it

Poor Jet... we could have countless more discussions regarding him

There are a fair number of people with whom I have very long and thought provoking conversations regarding the implications of events in this show. I'm always glad to discuss it, I learn a lot and I come to see things in a different light every time. It makes being in an otherwise expired fandom (in the sense that the show is over, and the story is finished) enjoyable.

Oh no you weren't I just wanted to apply to you I wasn't trying to be rude not that you were. I always feel like when I address people about things they feel like I'm degrading their opinion and they often act hastily. Which is a disappointment.

Everything you just worded is a summarized means of what would have taken me hours but relatively related to it xD It made me smile that someone else thinks Sokka's respect for women draws from Suki's first interaction with him if not I feel like in a less jerk-ish way we would have had a Hahn on The Avatar team that deserved his irony. But I'm glad Sokka was taught the things he was and given opportunities to develop into such a good character. Made him extremely likable his emotions and personality were so realistic.

Gosh we could, Jet, though his earlier attempts, was actual a nice character. We all have characteristics that fault us as people but form as beings and make us strong (: I feel so much respect for his last encounter with the group.
I feel like Katara should have saved him with the oasis water but had that happened I'm still questioning whether or not she could have saved Aang and Jet would have attempted to help. Its all so hazy but vivid its confusing. Haha. So many 'what if's' but its best the series happened the way it did.

Completely agreed, glad your such an open-minded person that's easy to relate to~ Makes me feel secure about my opinions while being respective and open-minded to others.

That's good to know... you had me worried

Yes, it's interesting to watch how Sokka's experiences contribute to his growth and transformation. I'm glad that they didn't go too far with that growth though, he was still able to retain the core elements of his character. His sarcasm and bullheadedness was getting him into trouble all the way through the end of the series, even though the way he went about it distinctly changed. As Aunt Wuu said, he would experience a lot of self inflicted suffering... it's just in his nature

I talked about Jet (at length) in the description of this picture: [link] .

When it comes to his final encounter with them though, I think she could have saved him with the spirit water... but even when she used it to heal Aang, it wasn't an instantaneous or complete fix. She needed more time, and with the Dai Li just outside the door... she wasn't going to have it. They helped the gAang better by holding them off and covering their escape, if she had stopped to heal him they might not have gotten out. And, it was imperative that they get out, so they could expose Long Feng and his manipulation of the Earth King, thereby creating a new ally in the war.

But, this is getting back to the choices of the creators. They could have chosen a different path where one of our "what if's" lie... but we can never truly know which path that would've been, or where it would lead , all we can do is speculate

No... they added 13 more episodes to the total and pushed it back to next year

So, while the series is going to be much longer and (probably) better, it unfortunately makes our wait that much longer...
