Description
Avatar gets a lot of credit for a lot of things. Fluid fight scenes, great dialog, original idea. Amid all of this hype, the beautiful storytelling of the creators seems to get forgotten.Yes, the art is wonderful, But its not the best I've seen. Yes, It has fantastic comedy, but other shows have that too. Yes, it's original, but originality is common these days. But what this show has, that no other Television show I've seen has, is a real and defined story.
Look at shows like Naruto, Bleach; even live action shows like MASH and more recently House. The motivation to watch these shows is often on an episode basis, the formulaic Problem/solution one hour deal (and yes Avatar has this for each episode as well). But Avatar also has a long term motivation, a climax that each individual episode leads up to. An Epic Battle and more importantly, an end.
One could Argue that many shows have this long term motivation, Like Naruto and the main evil group fights, or Bleach and rescuing Rukia; and in a way it's true. But, once you have that Climax and Fall from action, another hurtle emerges, one more World ending fight with similar rising action (train, fight low-lings, etc; what I like to call the Dragon-Ball Z effect). In the real world, things like this just don't happen, and even if they did its just not plausible that one man or group could be at the center of defense against every Apocalyptic event. It's just not relatable and after a while, it gets boring.
Beyond just having an end, Avatar has one more fantastic story element, something that is often attempted but almost never done correctly (and the reason why this rant is here); a smooth Bad-guy to good-guy transition.
We all face tough choices, and we all regret our decisions. Zuko is the ultimate representation of this human quality, and I think that is the reason why Avatar fans love him so much; he's just like us.
Thanks for looking
-Matt

Zukoยดs one of my fav characters. I love the double story, before I watched all the whole episodes in the internet, I nearly always switched to the Zuko scenes.
And I also love the sarcastic, funny scenes^^

Nicely done artwork, and I totally agree with you about the storytelling. On top of that, the characters are surprisingly deep for a children's show and have complex motivations - even the bad guys.

Thanks for that man, no seriously. The simple fact that Avatar had an END is huge for me. It gives the show major major credit and just adds to its greatness. I also call it the DBZ effect.
For example, the Naruto series finally came to the climax point, to the ultimate showdown we've all been waiting for...I was SO HAPPY I thought I saw the end of the tunnle, but nope.
Anyway, beautiful piece I love it! You dont see artwork surrounded on this period of the avatar story too much.

Awesome pic, this is one of my favourite episodes of Avatar, due to all the backstory and information it gives on Zuko and the elements of his character as he grows throughout the show.

What a beautiful picture! I love the mood, and the colors, and the clouds are gorgeous. Besides that, your artist description was really well-written, and it's true! I haven't ever seen a smooth bad-guy to good-guy transition, except for Zuko's (btw, he's my favorite).

That's one of the reasns I love Avatar so much! It has a plot that flows between episodes and things get touched o in different episodes, tying the whole thing together beautifully. And Zuko is easily one of the shows most character-developed characters, and definently the most relatable. You have skills. Thanks for the post

im an absolute avatard, so i agree with everything you say hands down! but its still a good point and would entice me to watch the series even if i hadnt seen it!!
i also LOVE the art! i hardly EVER see anything from the zuko alone period and i commend you HIGHLY for doing so! :3
it looks fantastic!

Thank you!
The problem with doing art from the "Zuko Alone" episode is that there is not one standout scene to replicate. Sure, there's the fight at the end, there's the sword teaching, The Zuko and his mom scenes; But none of these amazing scenes can singularly represent the mood and feeling of the entire episode, the sense of overall loneliness and debasing of pride.
This little scene, that takes up all of about three seconds, makes it for me. It's Zuko, he's alone in the blazing heat...and he's looking down the long winding path to the small town before him.
It's not perfect, but It's the closest I can get.

So true, Zuko is my favourite because he goes through so much and then becomes a better person at the end of it all because hes learned. As the story progesses both he and Aang mature and grow up, I dont think many people really see the amazing story behind this cartoon, and allot are missing out on seeing how wonderful it really is. Great picture, it kinda reminds me of what Iroh said - Sometimes life is like a dark tunnel, you cant always see the light at the end of the tunnel, but if you just keep moving, you will come to a better place ^^
phew that was allot but I love to rant hahaha xxxx fab art - favs
