If you go by the orginal comics his trailer doesnt disspear but actually shirnks down into a sort of subspace. kinda like how megatron always shrink size when transforming in to a gun. They never really approach this in the cartoons though. But the comics use it as an old technology that used lots of power to do. So it was never widely used by transformers.

I actually noticed that, I always wondered where the trailer went, I think the first time I asked the question was when Prime and Megatron had that battle of Honor in that quarry pit to see who would go and who stayed on Earth. I was about 6 or 7 at the time.

I swear his trailer just seems to just magically appear out of thin air sometimes, then mysteriously disappear the next!

From what the comics say Optimus' trailer stays on the battle field as an extra comunications relay, medical unit for Ratchet, and housing for Roller.
But...how come we never see it during battles!

It's a developing mystery from the cartoon that is sometimes answered. When he goes from Semi to bot his trailer comes off and zooms off somewhere and then, we never see it again! It's the vanishing trailer!

I know where it goes. A pissed off wizard in the Harry Potter universe sent a curse through dimensions that makes his trailer shrink to the point where you can't see it when he's in robot mode. I hope he doesn't step on it one of these days.

Recently watched all.. er most, of G1 with some associates of mine. We are convinced that the trailer is the real brains behind the autobots and runs off to hide and stay safe while Optimus kicks some ass. We named him Autobot Steve.

Awesome! I just started watching the G1 Transformers and I kept going "Wait...where'd the trailer come from & where did it go?" How did animators get away with that stuff in the '80s? Also, did nobody care about the impossiblities of a GIANT robot turning into a tape deck or a gun Seriously?...No one said ANYTHING for all that time!? NO ONE!?
