I respect the way each one has "to help", so let's avoid the religious drama and be straight to the point.In my opinion, praying for Japan is just useless. And I'm christian. Praying helps and aids people... but no matter how much we all try, we cannot rebuild a house with prayers.
So, stop praying and do something useful. Or do both.
Donate directly to Japan's red cross, send medical supplies, find legitimate charities, donate via text message, donate through itunes, donate on facebook, donate your airline miles, spread the word, add donation links on your websites, etc.
GO JAPAN. My heart is with you.

I think it's more about the "image" in most cases, to at least try to say/write something nice, or that's my impression. Offering money is something most do IRL

Personally, I really don't see the point to praying. But I also grew up Catholic and know a lot of good Christians, Muslims, and Jews. Throw a few Rasta's in the mix and that's everyone I talk to on a regular basis. We commonly get drunk together, and have drunken discussions on religion all the time and they never get loud or rude. They remain completely civil. Why? Because everyone has a right to their own opinion.
Praying helps calm people's minds just like meditating. So for someone to sit down and pray over what's happening in Japan, they are reassessing their thoughts and making a weighted decision on what to do about it, also asking for guidance from a perceived greater power.
No matter what I believe in, praying helps them understand what they have in their lives that they are capable of donating, or whether or not they're able to give up everything for a couple of months and go help people one on one, which a lot of them have traveled to Africa to rebuild schools periodically.
Prayer is important, relaxation is important, thinking over your plans is important. So I don't see the point of this deviation other than attention.

I always get annoyed when folks pray or make image macros to "help" after a natural disaster.
All of the prayers and lolcats in the world will not help after a disaster, just blood, sweat, tears and donations.

of course praying is useless, but for people with no money to help, is the best thing they can do, and they don't harm anybody. saying prayers are useless is even more useless than pray.

Actually, that's always been going on. People have been praying for years, but is it Human effort or God's effort that's tried to change this...?
