Description
The Machine - "Ava" = Actress Caity Lotz
"The Machine" is a 2013 British dark science fiction thriller film directed and written by Caradog W. James. It stars Caity Lotz and Toby Stephens as computer scientists who create an artificial intelligence.
Set in the future and with the world plunged in economic crisis and a new cold war with China, Britain's Ministry of Defense (MoD) is on the verge of developing the world's first artificially intelligent
robotic soldier.
Two artificial intelligence engineers come together as they work to create the first ever self-aware artificial intelligence. A veteran AI engineer Vincent McCarthy (Toby Stephens) secretly hopes to develop
technology to help his diseased daughter survive, even if it means funding comes from the powerful Ministry of Defense (MoD). His new partner Ava (Caity Lotz) is a young woman gifted in the field of AI and
computers, is brought on after her breakthroughs are recognized by the MoD.
Then things go terribly wrong when the MoD takes over the AI research and advances the scientists work to the next level, teaching the AI to kill humans and follow military instructions.
Vincent's scheming army boss is only really interested in a killing machine that will follow his every command. When Vincent's creation shows signs of true consciousness, intelligence and love, Thomson orders
it to be deactivated - but the machine has its own ideas and fights back with a vengeance.
For a movie made under a small budget, this was a thoroughly enjoyable movie with some interesting thoughts on AI/cyborgs and what may ultimately serve to differentiate humans and machines.
As one film-fan critic wrote, "It is such a relief to see an honest to God good B-movie these days. A film with a somewhat flawed script, limited budget, tons of vision and the balls to take itself seriously...
... The Machine understands why Sci-fi was so vivid and memorable in the 1970's and 80's - it's about art. Bold, heavily featured, skillfully realized art design-much of which here is brought to life through
skillful practical effects. It really shows. Things feel real. Sets feel real, violence feels real, CGI is used well and, as the case should always be, doesn't draw undue attention to itself. "
I personally enjoyed seeing this great new british sci-fi film.
I am sure Hollywood will pick up this film script one day and make into into an Epic production, or a sequel. Everyone wants to see a sequel to this film!

Thanks Graham,
I also agree with you. It could have been much better. But considering the low budget they had and some little
flaws with the script-story, it was not that bad either.

I just seen it too, a little bit late, but well worth seeing it.
The film story was very good and the acting too. Too bad this little film company did not have
a big budget to make an epic Hollywood style production. But it was still very good.
